Rapamycin, Easter Island Drug, Shows Promise In Boosting Aging Brain, Mice Study Shows

Scientists at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio are investigating a potential new drug that could improve learning and memory during aging -- thanks to Easter Island?

The drug, called rapamycin, comes from isolated bacterial products in the soil of the Polynesian island, known as the home to the famous moai statues. When given to mice, rapamycin seems to boost cognitive skills in young and old mice.

"We made the young ones learn, and remember what they learned, better than what is normal," study researcher Veronica Galvan, Ph.D., assistant professor of physiology at the Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies at the UT Health Science Center, said in a statement. "Among the older mice, the ones fed with a diet including rapamycin actually showed an improvement, negating the normal decline that you see in these functions with age."

The mice in the Neuroscience study also had fewer symptoms of depression and anxiety when given the rapamycin, researchers found.

Rapamycin -- which is named for the Polynesian name for Easter Island, Rapa Nui -- is already used for antifungal purposes among transplant patients.

In 2009, the Wall Street Journal reported that rapamycin was shown in a Nature study to help mice live longer.

Careers in Faith and Religion: Couple Took College Leadership to Church Pastorship

With marriage as a focus, together the Jenkins build on their professional calling

Courtney and Cory Jenkins, a couple in careers of ministry (Image: Jenkins)

In a special series on Careers in Faith and Religion, we highlight professionals whose everyday work lives are centered on spirituality.

For Cory and Courtney Jenkins, ministry is not just a calling. It?s a passion and profession that has empowered and strengthened their marriage, their congregations, and their ministries. As pastors of their respective churches and founders of Team Jenkins Ministries Inc., the couple?s faith-based lifestyle is one that doesn?t end with the typical clocking out.

Cory and Courtney married in 2008 after meeting at Princeton Theological Seminary, where they both were studying to receive their Master?s of Divinity degrees.? Though they had previously been at neighboring HBCU?s during the same time? Spelman and Morehouse Colleges? it wasn?t until they sought to equip themselves for ministry when they really connected.

A Unique Assignment: While couples in ministry are becoming more common in today?s churches, Courtney, 30, and Cory, 30, pastor separate congregations in different denominations. Cory serves as senior pastor at Shiloh Baptist Church in Cleveland. And Courtney is the first African-American and female pastor at Euclid Avenue Congregational Church in the United Church of Christ. Though very close in proximity? just about five minutes apart?the two churches serve very different neighborhoods and cultures.

The Work Day: While most clergy couples are together on Sunday mornings, Courtney and Cory each head to their own churches where they minister and manage on a full-time basis. Cory says since they both have a pastoral perspective, they can share similar experiences and learn from one another. In addition to the commonality of their careers, Courtney likes the unique opportunity that they get to do ministry on an even greater scale. Oftentimes, their churches will partner together to reach a greater audience and serve more people.? ?It?s a wonderful opportunity to combine ideas, power, and resources that we might be able to make a greater impact,? Courtney says.

Brand-Building: As a young married couple Courtney and Cory are often asked to teach and advise on the topic of marriage. The innovative couple even tag teams, giving them the opportunity to share both of their perspectives on a particular topic or issue. They have dedicated much of their careers in ministry to helping enrich the marriages of those they encounter through advisement and counseling.

Work-Life Balance: Both Courtney and Cory stress the importance of maintaining a balance between marriage and their ministries. They?ve found a way to focus on husband-and-wife time by having ?Marriage Mondays,? where they spend the day together lounging at home or take a quick vacation. ?[Our] marriage is our first ministry,? Courtney says.? ?If that?s not right, nothing else is.?

Here are a few tips from the Jenkins on finding success in professions of ministry:

Education is still necessary: The Jenkins urge those who want to pursue ministry to invest in higher education and training in order to qualify themselves for the calling and enhance their gifts.

Be aware that it?s not your typical 9-to-5 job: Ministry is oftentimes not a Sunday-only occupation, the Jenkins say. Obligations for building a successful ministry can mean a 24-7, 365-day commitment. It requires preparation, selflessness, and accessibility, the Jenkins say.

Character and integrity are top tenants of a successful ministry: The profession of ministry is one that can sometimes be compromised or mishandled. One can easily become consumed with the bright lights and accolades that come along with ministry. Cory and Courtney are mindful to always hold in high regard the significant magnitude of what they believe is God?s calling on their lives.

Bulgaria gay parade peaceful, despite provocations

A gay pride march in the Bulgarian capital Sofia stayed peaceful Saturday, but homosexuality remains a sensitive issue across the Balkans.

A Pride Parade in Bulgaria passed without threatened violence yesterday, but homosexuality remains a sensitive issue across the Balkans.

In the weeks before, fears of violence had been stoked by provocative language from opponents of the parade. Last week one small nationalist party paid for billboard advertisements across Sofia saying ?Gay Parade Allowed ? Smoking Banned. Which is more harmful for the nation??

Global media attention was guaranteed when Father Evgeniy Yanakiev, an Orthodox priest from eastern Bulgaria, said?"stones?should be thrown" at parade participants,?the Bulgarian newswire Novinite reported.?A chorus of international disapproval called for the Bulgarian Orthodox Patriarchate to distance itself from the comments, but instead the church issued a statement condemning the parade itself as a "harmful demonstration that violates the rights of Orthodox Christians," according to Novinite.

Organizers said yesterday's parade,?the biggest yet held in Bulgaria, is a step forward in highlighting the importance of tolerance for the gay community, but that there is a long way to go in broadening acceptance of homosexuals in society in the region.

?Everything was perfect,? says Marko Markov, one of the parade organizers.??For four consecutive years there has been no violence at all at the parade itself, though we were very concerned this year. The far right is very loud but they know they can?t harm us.?

During Bulgaria?s first Pride Parade, in 2008, extremists threw petrol bombs at marchers.

Pride events elsewhere in southeast Europe have attracted controversy and occasional violence.

* In September last year, Serbia banned the Belgrade Pride Parade, one of the most high-profile in the region, ostensibly to prevent a recurrence of attacks on the march by extremists.

* The previous year, 10,000 had rallied against gay parades in the same city.

* In June, Zeljko Kerum, maverick mayor of the Croatian coastal city of Split, urged people to ?ignore? a Pride Parade. After the event, he was quoted as saying that ?Split residents have, by ignoring the parade, shown what they think about it, that they are not interested, that they do not want it in their town and that it is not welcome in Split.?

Despite most countries havings passed gay equality legislation, homosexuality is seen as a taboo in many Balkan countries, particularly outside the bigger cities.

"Intolerance is driven by a fear that?homosexuality?undermines patriarchal notions of the 'nuclear family,' and therefore the 'traditional values' that supposedly make a society or nation 'normal.' ?Since most of the former Yugoslav countries are still states and nations in the making, their inchoate national identities feel particularly jeopardized by anything which in some way diminishes ??or even breaks with entirely ??the idea of heroic masculinity," says?Mirjana Kosic, executive director of TransConflict Serbia, an organization undertaking conflict transformation projects and research.

For Orthodox Christianity, the issue is one of centuries-old teachings on sexuality.?

Father Antim Manoliov, Archimandrite and Protosyncellus at the Metropolitan of Vidin in northwest Bulgaria, was critical of Father Yanakiev?s reported statements, but maintained the Church?s stance in opposing the parade and considering homosexual acts a sin.

?The Church cannot promote morality with offensive, attacking, or frantic words,? he says. ?The Church?s position is to help people spiritually, not to throw rocks as happened in Old Testament times. Those of different sexuality are like blind people and we should help them and not say bad things. But public protests and demonstrations discriminate against the majority in society.?

Markov argues that the Church?s stance on issues from IVF to a Madonna concert in Sofia ? it urged a boycott by the faithful ? have exposed it to criticism, but that it can still be a rallying point for opponents of gay rights, which are widely opposed.?

?A huge part of the gay population is closeted,? he said. ?Hate crimes are a big problem and public displays of affection between homosexuals are very rare and often met with attacks.?

Yesterday's pride parade was attended by 1,500 to 2,000 people, and drew several foreign ambassadors, including the US?s James Warlick and Britain?s representative Jonathan Allen.

The presence of 600 policemen may well have helped forestall clashes at the rally, though Markov says one participant had been attacked in the center of Sofia after the march, but was rescued by passers-by.

A counter demonstration was poorly attended, with only around 200 present, and was colored by the conspiracy theories of some of those involved ? for example that the US had a secret plot to turn Bulgaria into a gay tourism destination, or at least to subvert the country via sexuality as part of an imperialist mission.

Mercedes reportedly scraps hybrid plan for B-Class E-Cell Plus EV, going all-in on electrons with Tesla

mercedes-no-hybrid-for-e-cell-plus-Tesla

Mercedes' plans for a B-Class E-Cell Plus plug-in hybrid might headed for a change of direction. Take this all with a spoonful of NaCl, but looks like an all-electric powertrain made by none other than Tesla will be installed in the EV. As Autoblog Green notes, an anonymous spokesperson has reportedly claimed that the system switch-up is being made due to economics -- higher rebates and incentives are possible for zero-emission vehicles in the EV's US target market. No technical details were given on the new powertrain, but the original idea was to have a Volt-like 138-horsepower electric powerplant for the B-Class compact, with a 67-horsepower gas engine backing it up. At the very least, a collaboration between the two companies would make sense, since the Stuttgart automaker is effectively a five percent stakeholder in Tesla. So if you've been holding out for an EV with the Merc touch, check the source for the details.
