Apple's Siri Tells Boy to 'Shut the F*** Up'

Europe's economic mess, cheaper competitors a problem for Apple

(NEWSER) - There's actually a pocket of the world that's beginning to be less iPhone obsessed?and it's a big pocket. While Americans and Brits are still snapping up the latest Apple phones, the company's share of the continental European market is slipping, thanks to a weakened economy and competitors' price drops, Reuters reports. Between September and November, Apple's French market share dropped 9 percentage points, to 20%, compared to the year before; in Germany, it fell 5 points to 22%; and its market share also shrunk in Spain and Italy. In the US, however, the figure rose from 25% to 36%, while it jumped from 21% to 31% in Britain. More?

Former Le-Nature's exec gets 15 years in prison (AP)

PITTSBURGH ? The former chief revenue officer of defunct soft drink maker Le-Nature's has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for his role in a massive accounting fraud.

The sentence received Tuesday by Robert Lynn of Ligonier is second to that imposed earlier this year on former chief executive Gregory Podlucky who is serving 20 years in prison.

Federal prosecutors contend that Podlucky, Lynn and other company officials overstated the company's revenues in order to fraudulently receive more than $800 million in financing, which led to a loss of nearly $684 million to lenders, vendors and investors.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

An accounting director-turned-government witness has been sentenced to five years in federal prison and five years on federal probation for creating fake financial records that fooled auditors of defunct Pennsylvania soft drink maker Le-Nature's.

Tammy Jo Andreycak, 44, asked for probation or house arrest because she has been cooperating with investigators since even before she pleaded guilty in April 2008 to wire fraud, bank fraud, conspiracy and filing a false tax return as part of fudging accounting records at the behest of former chief executive and company founder Gregory Podlucky.

Podlucky pleaded guilty and is serving 20 years in prison for the scheme, which cost lenders and vendors about $684 million. Prosecutors contend Podlucky obtained $800 million in financing by fraudulently overstating the company's revenues but spent much of the money on a lavish lifestyle while the company foundered, with sales a fraction of what he ordered Andreycak to report.

She had faced between 12 and nearly 16 years in prison.

Senior U.S. District Judge Alan Bloch said that, while he agreed that Andreycak deserved a break on her sentence, he disagreed with her defense attorney, who had hoped that she would receive only probation.

"She was not a knave, low-level employee simply following orders she didn't understand," Bloch said. Rather, Block said, she was "one of only two people aware of the magnitude of the fraud," referring also to Podlucky.

Andreycak's mother and son, who appeared to be in his late teens, were not initially in the courtroom, but were brought in after she was sentenced and handcuffed by U.S. marshals to say a brief farewell. They did not comment, but cried as they left the courtroom.

"We are disappointed by the sentence, and it's not what we expected," defense attorney Edward Bilik said. "I think everybody in the courtroom was surprised."

Assistant U.S. Attorney James Garrett didn't recommend a specific sentence, but stressed to the judge how crucial Andreycak's cooperation was to his case.

"She has worked diligently to try to set things right to the best of her ability," Garrett said. He also said that, unlike Podlucky and some other company officials convicted in the scheme, Andreycak "did not do anything on her own initiative."

Bilik, who had asked the judge not to incarcerate his client, was asked afterward if he thought she did not get enough credit for her cooperation. "I think she received too much credit for what the CEO did," Bilik responded.

In a sentencing memorandum, Bilik described Andreycak as a single mother with a high school education and a secretarial certificate from a business school, with no accounting background, and as someone whom Podlucky called his "secretary" despite listing her as the company's director of accounting.

Among other things, Andreycak acknowledged inflating the company's 2005 gross sales to $287 million ? about $247 million of which were based on phony invoices and bank deposits, to defraud lenders. Andreycak reportedly used a computer program developed by Podlucky to keep two sets of books and "honestly believed the company would expand to profitability," according to the memorandum filed by her attorney, Edward Bilik.

When Andreycak learned otherwise as the company was forced into bankruptcy in 2006, she told a bankruptcy trustee everything she knew about the fraud. She continued to provide similar information to federal prosecutors, which is why Bilik has asked the court to consider probation or some form of home confinement, instead of federal prison.

Also to be sentenced later Tuesday is Robert Lynn, former president of Le-Nature's. Lynn, of Ligonier, was convicted of 10 counts of bank fraud, wire fraud and conspiracy in July despite claiming that he also was fooled by Podlucky and wasn't part of the scheme.

Plekanec's ice time has dwindled under new Canadiens coach

SUNRISE, Florida ? Tomas Plekanec is the Montreal Canadiens' leading scorer for the third consecutive season.

But as the team prepared to face the Florida Panthers on Saturday, the hard-working Czech finds himself as a third-line centre, spending less time on ice as head coach Randy Cunneyworth attempts to balance his offensive lines and their workloads.

?He?s done some very good work in a lot of different roles,? Cunneyworth said Friday, after the Canadiens went through a short, intense practice at the Panthers? facility. ?On the penalty kill, he?s been excellent, and again we?ve tried to focus on that part of his game to be the basis of the good work, but he knows he can bring a little more offence and intensity to his game.

?He?s working hard. We have other guys out there, so he doesn?t have to feel he has to take it all upon his shoulders.?

Plekanec leads all Canadiens forwards in ice time, averaging nearly 21 minutes a game. He is accustomed to being used on a top line and on both special teams.

But he has seen his ice time cut back since Cunneyworth replaced Jacques Martin behind the bench. Plekanec played 17:51 in the win over Ottawa on Tuesday and a season-low 17:20 Thursday night in Tampa.

Part of Cunneyworth?s rationale is to keep his players fresh, but he?s also trying to find some chemistry among his forwards.

Michael Cammalleri had been struggling on a line with Plekanec and went 10 games without a goal. He has now scored in each of the past two games while playing with David Desharnais.

The coach has also tried to give second-year centre Lars Eller a boost by putting him between the team?s top goal-scorers, Erik Cole and Max Pacioretty.

Plekanec?s new playmates are the streaky Andrei Kostitsyn and hard-working Travis Moen. The latter has eight goals this season, the fourth-highest total on the team, but has only one assist in his last 12 games.

Plekanec, who has a cap hit of $5 million US, has been minus-8 in the last seven games and is minus-10 for the season. That?s unfamiliar territory for a player who was a career plus-33 coming into this season.

?I?m playing what I?m asked to do and I try to do my best,? Plekanec said. ?If it?s the first, second, third or fourth line, it?s all up to coach to decide that. I?m not the type of guy who?s going to go to him and ask why this is happening. I want to play better, and that?s the main thing for myself.

?I know through the years when I?m not playing well, and I know I have to be better,? Plekanec said. ?You have ups and downs as a player. You need to fight through it, work hard and play better. I had a good start and then I slowed down a bit, but being a veteran, I have to be better. We?re in a tough spot fighting for the playoffs and we need the veterans to produce.?

Plekanec admitted confidence could be a factor.

?I don?t question my work ethic,? he said. ?I had a good chance (Thursday night against Tampa Bay) in the first period, and maybe if I score there I get some confidence.?

Cunneyworth said the recent line changes are a work in progress.

?We?re still creating chemistry,? he said. ?We did a lot of good things and we?ll get better. We have guys who are making new alliances on the lines and that?s very important.?

Cunneyworth said Friday?s practice offered an antidote to the disappointment that followed the 4-3 loss in Tampa.

?(It was) short and hard,? he explained. ?Obviously, we?re in a similar boat as the other day in seeing what the guys need on a daily basis and we know they?re tired and sore after a game, but they feel better after an intense but short workout.

?We?re disappointed, but it was good (practice) to prepare to play a good team that?s been going well at home. We have to stay sharp. We have to put some effort into it, push the body a little.?

The coach doesn?t expect any lineup changes against the Panthers, which means Chris Campoli and Yannick Weber will be healthy scratches and Carey Price gets the start in goal.

Why did TellApart write TAFE instead of just using Tornado or any of the existing pure Python webservers?

It should be cleared up that TAFE stands for TellApart Frontend End and, as described in Mark Ayzenshtat's blog post (mentioned in the question,) is a framework built on the python coroutine library gevent. The decision In general to move from apache/mod_wsgi was made before I joined TellApart.?

TellApart used this blog post http://nichol.as/benchmark-of-py... to backup internal tests concluding in using gevent for the web server framework. Gevent is the lowest latency web server framework maintaining the smallest memory footprint of all frameworks profiled. A clear win/win.

Furthermore, gevent is built around a cooperative yielding mechanism to swap the lightweight "green" threads. A process can force itself to yield by performing a monkey patched blocking operation (e.g. socket operations) or explicitly calling gevent.sleep(0). This is important for TellApart's server infrastructure though because requests to the storage layer make up the vast majority of the latency for each request. Therefore to handle the large number of latency bound requests we receive, our server infrastructure must be nonblocking on socket operations which is a built in feature to gevent.

I haven't worked with Tornado but reading through some blog posts, non-blocking socket requests, namely database requests, block by default. This blog http://chart.io/blog/2011/06/10/... from chart.io mentions some python module hacking to accomplish a nonblocking mysql request. Thus, with some engineering the same behavior can be (sort of) accomplished by not blocking between sending a request and receiving the results although this still falls short of gevent's non-blocking socket operations.

1983 Apple prototype pictures show iPhone ancestor (Digital Trends)

phone 2Here?s a nice little bit of Apple trivia for you. Apple?s first touchscreen technically wasn?t the 2007 launched iPhone. The company had apparently designed a prototype of a touchscreen?landline phone back in the 1980s.

It?s an interesting look into the early game plan which eventually gave birth to the iPhone. The all-white stationary device?s point of origin seems to be 1983. It features a stylus to interact with the built-in screen, and one of the pictures shows off some sort of accounting and check-writing application; possibly using a modem to pay bills.

The phone prototype never made it into production, but it was supposedly designed by Harmtut Esslinger. The German-American Esslinger is the guy behind the Apple IIc, which was the company?s first push towards a portable computer. The 1983 touchscreen phone definitely has some of the Apple design elements from that period. Hartmut Esslinger later went on to found a company called Frogdesign.apple phone prototype

Mashable points out that this actually isn?t the first time these pictures have been passed around the Internet. However, interest in the old prototypes has been renewed thanks to a peek at the Stanford University stockpile of Apple documents, which had previously been locked away. These archives were donated to Stanford back in 1997 when Jobs returned to the company after being forced out.

Apparently there are a large number of prototype?s squirreled away, some resembling Apple?s current products. There?s even a device that looks like a tablet. It would be great to see a museum documenting the trail of Apple?s cast-off ideas, given the company?s philosophy of simplicity. Hopefully Stanford opens up the collection to the public at some point.
