Gold Always Glitters In India: Will Curbing Its Import Save The Economy?

"An inch of time is an inch of gold, but you can't buy that inch of time with an inch of gold." Is this Chinese proverb proves correct in the case of Indians who invest in the yellow metal for good times tomorrow? Or, is the craze for the glittering object really ruining the country's economy?

Time and again, the government, economists and experts have ridiculed the people's obsession with gold and pointed out the need to curtail the imports of the yellow metal to improve trade deficit.

Indians have an irresistible temptation to buy gold - either as ornaments or as investments. Their obsession with the gold jewelry has roots in their culture, tradition and also in the economic realities in the rural and grass root levels of the society. As an investment, gold has been an easier bet to hedge against inflation and other risks. Indians have been buying and trading in gold since time immemorial, and they continue to buy even now, at a time when it is more expensive than ever before.?

The government and experts believe that high gold imports are fatal to the economy and Indians should stop investing in gold. They say this would solve India's economic problems, erase the current account deficit, appreciate rupee and boost growth. ?They say the country's balance of payment (BOP) is negative because of the gold imports.

"Quantum of import of gold ... is a clear indication (that) large section of community...want (to) investment in dead asset only with expectation that value would appreciate", Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said while speaking at a function in Mumbai last week. He said that "there is a need to spread financial literacy to encourage people to invest in?market instruments" and dissuade them from investing in gold.

The government believes India's common men can easily save the country's faltering economy by sacrificing their passion for gold.

However, the people who have spent their fortunes on gold and a section of analysts have a different point of view. They say though gold imports affect the country's BOP position in the short-term, India's gold reserves will benefit the people and the country in the longer run. They feel there is no base in saying that gold is idle asset. "From investors' point of view, gold is not an idle asset. When it is appreciating, it is not a dead asset for the holder," says Jayesh Nathwani of FXWire.

To understand both the standpoints, one needs to understand what gold means for Indians and the cultural and economic reasons associated with this.

Quick Facts About India's Gold and Economy

  • India is the world's largest importer of gold. India accounts for nearly one-third of the total world demand for gold. India's gold imports were higher than those of twelve of its states' GSDP in the year 2010-11.
  • Gold's share in total import bill of the country has gone up from 8.1 percent in 2001-02 to 9.6 percent in 2010-11. The average rate of growth of gold imports in the last three years was 26.8 percent. At this rate, the gold import bill will be approximately $ 100 billion by 2015-16.
  • According to a World Gold Council report, India has savings rate of approximate 30 percent and 10 percent of this is in gold. It says that gold reserves in India, both with private and government, was around 20,000 tons at the end of 2011 and it is worth roughly Rs 54 lakh crore, which is 60 percent ?of the nominal GDP of India in 2011-12.
  • Gold import value for the year 2010-11 was higher than the budget-estimated expenditure on Urban Development, Housing, and Family Welfare for the year 2010-11.
  • According to the Gold Council report, gold jewelry accounted for about 75 percent?of the total Indian gold demand in 2009, the remainder?being investment (23 percent) and decorative and industrial use (2 percent).
  • Demand for gold in India is not depended on international prices and is depended on the seasonal demands in the country, like weddings and festivals. So people tend to buy gold whatever may be the price in these seasons.

India's Golden Tradition

Gold is a part and parcel of India's culture and traditions. As money, jewelry, status symbol and investment, gold has played a crucial role in the lives of Indian foe centuries. A family's wealth was determined on the quantity of gold and land they had. Gold is considered as "Lakshmi" (the Hindu goddess of wealth) and a symbol of prosperity.

Traditionally and as a religious practice, an Indian woman wears ornaments throughout her life. Gold is her favorite jewelry. Normally, from childhood to the end of her life, gold adorns her body in several forms depending on her wealth and status. ?Though the trend is tilted towards platinum and white gold in recent times among the urban elite, for the middle and lower class families, jewelry means only gold.

Nothing could replace gold's stature and importance in the Indian society. In south India, the first food a newborn consumes will be gold. According to the tradition, the elder family member will make a paste of a local herb and minute amount of gold and feed the baby. This is believed to bring wealth and prosperity to the baby in his/her life.

Gold is also part of the religious practices at homes and temples. In several states, the yellow metal is worshipped as a symbol of Lakshmi and wealth.

New candidate drug stops cancer cells, regenerates nerve cells

ScienceDaily (June 21, 2012) ? Scientists have developed a small-molecule-inhibiting drug that in early laboratory cell tests stopped breast cancer cells from spreading and also promoted the growth of early nerve cells called neurites.

Researchers from Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center report their findings online June 21 in Chemistry & Biology. The scientists named their lead drug candidate "Rhosin" and hope future testing shows it to be promising for the treatment of various cancers or nervous system damage.

The inhibitor overcomes a number of previous scientific challenges by precisely targeting a single component of a cell signaling protein complex called Rho GTPases. This complex regulates cell movement and growth throughout the body. Miscues in Rho GTPase processes are also widely implicated in human diseases, including various cancers and neurologic disorders.

"Although still years from clinical development, in principle Rhosin could be useful in therapy for many kinds of cancer or possibly neuron and spinal cord regeneration," said Yi Zheng, PhD, lead investigator and director of Experimental Hematology and Cancer Biology at Cincinnati Children's. "We've performed in silica (computerized) rational drug design, pharmacological characterization and cell tests in the laboratory, and we are now starting to work with mouse models."

Because the role of Rho GTPases in cellular processes and cancer formation is well established, researchers have spent years trying to identify safe and effective therapeutic targets for specific parts of the protein complex. In particular, scientists have focused on the center protein in the complex called RhoA, which is essential for the signaling function of the complex. In breast cancer for example, increased RhoA activity makes the cancer cells more invasive and causes them to spread, while a deficiency of RhoA suppresses cancer growth and progression.

Despite this knowledge, past efforts to develop an effective small-molecule inhibitor for RhoA have failed, explained Zheng, who has studied Rho GTPases for over two decades. Most roadblocks stem from a lack of specificity in how researchers have been able to target RhoA, a resulting lack of efficiency in affecting molecular processes, problems with toxicity, and the inability to find a workable drug design.

For the current study, Zheng and his colleagues started with the extensive body of research from Cincinnati Children's and other institutions describing the processes and functions of Rho GTPases. They then used high-throughput computerized molecular screening and computerized drug design to reveal a druggable target site. This also provided a preliminary virtual simulation on the potential effectiveness of candidate drugs.

A key challenge to binding a small-molecule inhibitor to RhoA is the protein's globular structure and lack of surface pocket areas suitable for easy binding, Zheng said. The unique chemical structure of the lead compound identified by researchers, Rhosin, allows it to effectively bind to two shallow surface grooves on RhoA. This enables the candidate drug to take root and begin affecting cells. The two-legged configuration of Rosin also describes a useful drug design strategy for more effectively targeting difficult molecular sites like RhoA.

The researchers also wanted to make sure Rhosin effectively blocked what are known as guanine nucleotide exchange factors (GEFs). Guanine nucleotide is a critical energy source and signaling component of cells. Activation of GEFs is required to set off the regulatory signaling of GTPases (GTP stands for guanosine triphosphate).

After conducting a series of laboratory cell tests to verify the targeting and binding capabilities of Rhosin to RhoA, the researchers then tested the candidate drug's impact on cultured breast cancer cells and nerve cells.

In tests on a human breast cancer cells, Rhosin inhibited cell growth and the formation of mammary spheres in a dose dependent manner, acting specifically on RhoA molecular targets without disrupting other critical cellular processes. Rhosin does not affect non-cancerous breast cells. This, along with other tests the scientists performed, indicated Rhosin's effectiveness in targeting RhoA-mediated breast cancer proliferation, according to the researchers.

Researchers also treated an extensively tested line of neuronal cells with Rhosin, along with nerve growth factor, a protein that is important to the growth and survival of neurons. Rhosin worked with nerve growth factor in a dose-dependent way to promote the proliferation of branching neurites from the neuronal cells. Neurites are young or early stage extensions from neurons required for neuronal communications.

Funding for the study came from National Institutes of Health.

Also collaborating on the study were NanoTemper Technologies in Munich, Germany and the Drug Discovery Center at the University of Cincinnati.

The Q.OST Virus

In the planet earth's history, men and women fought each other leading to numerous death's and the loss of loyal and heartwarming family members.Day after day people die and this time for some reason the scientist were looking for something to stop the war with a killing machine,a virus which could kill anyone and now it had been released into the world.

2033-2055,The world was at a state of chaos and retribution. When the virus was being in the process of creation,a war had broken out between America,Asia,Europe, and few parts of the small inhabited Germany. The results were horrifying and the outcome of survival was impossible as day after day all you could hear was bombs and planes in the air and the grenades.

Now in this year of 2099,the virus going by the name of Q.OST had been released due to Russia's attack on the main american institute of studies lab was destroyed and the virus spread. In order for people to gain the virus they had to be touched by it and now the virus has been unstoppable until now.

For some people this was a day bound to come and for others the remaining factions and resistance should fight on till their is nothing to for.If all of the factions do die then earth itself would become a new, decontaminated planet and when the virus gets harder so does the challenges. The only way for them to stop the virus is to find a cure within a girl who's blood will cure the world and a new enemy from germany who they never will expect.

Q.OST Virus

The Q.OST virus works from the affected human with the disease by touch. The virus goes to the genetic partials of the body and flows just like blood and you have a matter of 48 hours before the virus begins to take full fledged affect. It then goes to the morphologies which causes either lung failure or cancer for a short amount of time unless they parish. If the person does survive then it goes to the cells and it starts to attack until it's full of the Q.OST. the gene's also start to change as well as personality and mind structure.

As soon as the cells are all green with the virus the blood then begins to turn vial and the blood cells then cause the organs to malfunction and the movement then become's stale and that person is petrified and cannot move for a matter of time until the virus is silent and then it kicks in.If that person is strong enough they may become immune to any other diseases .

Effects of the Q.OST Virus

Naurem-The Bone's throughout the body break uneven and leave the person petrified for a maximum of days but this is a rare effect and catching it can result in severe pain and even death.

Detonia-This effect is the first to be caused if Naurem doesn't take effect. Hallucinating things of a nightmare.

Predoia-this causes the change in gene's and makes the body unhealthy and solid to the bone

Vacium-This stage last until that person age's at 30 and they die.It has no effect but makes the person's eyes pitch black and they become psychically stronger but gain multiple personality's.

Known Out-Post

Our microbes, ourselves: Billions of bacteria within, essential for immune function, are ours alone

ScienceDaily (June 21, 2012) ? Gut bacteria's key role in immunity is tuned to the host species, researchers have found, suggesting that the superabundant microbes lining our digestive tract evolved with us -- a tantalizing clue in the mysterious recent spike in human autoimmune disorders.

A new study reports that the superabundance of microbial life lining our GI tracts has coevolved with us. These internal bacteria, which are essential for a healthy immune system, are ultimately our evolutionary partners. In other words, humans may have co-evolved with gut bacteria unique to humans, which are not immunologically functional in other mammals.

This study, the first to demonstrate that microbes are specific to their host species, also sheds light on what's called 'the hygiene hypothesis.' According to this idea, living in increasingly hyper-hygienic environments might contribute to recent spikes in childhood allergies, as these beneficial host-specific microbes are hindered by the plethora of antibacterial home products and cleaning chemicals.

"For every cell in your body that is you, that contains your specific genetic information, there are approximately nine foreign bacterial cells, primarily in your digestive tract and even on your skin," said Dennis Kasper, HMS professor of microbiology and immunobiology and senior author on the paper. "From the viewpoint of cell count, every human being is ninety percent microbial. Now we've found that these bacteria, which we need for optimal health, are species specific."

This paper will appear in the June 22 issue of Cell.

That 500 to 1,000 microbial species inhabit mammals has long been documented. Researchers have suggested that when it comes to digestion and other metabolic activities, the particular species of bacteria may not be significant provided the bacteria contain specific, helpful genes. In other words, a bacterium that breaks down food in the mouse gut can probably do the same in the human.

But the microbes that fortify our immune system have not been studied in this regard. Are they functionally unique, or would any species suffice?

To address this question, Hachung Chung, a postdoctoral researcher in Kasper's lab, studied two groups of mice, both of which had been bred to lack microbial flora. For one group, she introduced microbial species that are natural to mice, and to the second, she introduced human microbes.

For both groups of mice, an equal quantity of microbes, and an equal diversity of species, soon flourished in their digestive tracts.

But despite this apparent similarity, when Chung examined the intestinal tissue, including intestinal lymph nodes, of mice from each of the two groups, she discovered that the mice with humanized microbes had surprisingly low levels of immune cells, levels equivalent to mice who lacked intestinal bacteria all together.

"Despite the abundant and complex community of bacteria that were in the human flora mice, it seemed like the mouse host did not recognize the bacteria, as if the mice were germ-free," said Chung.

Chung repeated the experiment, only this time populating a third group of mice with microbes common to rats. This new group showed the same immune system deficiency as the humanized mice. "I was very surprised to see that," Chung said. "Naturally, I would have expected more of a half-way response."

In a third experiment, Chung infected all the mice with salmonella. Almost from day one, the mice with human flora showed significantly higher levels of salmonella in their system than the mice with normal flora. The immune systems of the mice with human flora were effectively incapable of fending off the pathogenic bacteria.

"This raises serious questions regarding our current overuse of antibiotics, as well as ultra-hygienic environments that many of us live in," said Kasper. "If the bacteria within us are specific to us and necessary for normal immune system function, then it's important to know if we are in fact losing these vital bacteria. Are we losing the bacteria we have coevolved with? If that is the case, then this is yet further evidence supporting the idea that the loss of good bacteria is partly to blame for the increased rates of autoimmunity that we are now seeing."
