Russia says Iran's nuclear power plant fully operational

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Iran's first atomic power plant, a symbol of what the Islamic Republic says is its peaceful nuclear ambition, is now operating at full capacity, Russia's state nuclear corporation Rosatom said on Friday.

The Russian-built 1,000-megawatt reactor near the Gulf city of Bushehr, was plugged into Iran's national grid last September, ending years of delays and suspicions that Moscow was using the project as a diplomatic lever.

Oil-rich Iran says electricity generation is the main motivation for nuclear work that its adversaries say is really aimed at getting atomic weapons capability.

However, the Bushehr plant is not considered a major proliferation threat by nuclear inspectors whose concern is focused on sites where Iran enriches nuclear fuel, in defiance of U.N. Security Council resolutions demanding it stop.

Bushehr was started by Germany's Siemens before the 1979 Islamic Revolution and was taken over by Russian engineers in the 1990s.

The United States for years urged Russia to abandon the project, fearing it could help Tehran develop nuclear weapons.

Those concerns were eased by an agreement under which Russia will supply enriched uranium for the reactor and repatriate spent fuel that could be reprocessed into weapons-grade plutonium.

Russia sees Iran as a counterweight to U.S. clout but is a partner of the United States and four other powers in efforts to rein in Tehran's nuclear activities.

The U.N. nuclear agency said this week that Iran, in just a few months, had doubled the number of uranium enrichment centrifuges it has in an underground bunker, showing Tehran continued to expand its nuclear program despite Western sanctions and the threat of an Israeli attack.

Russia has warned Israel and the United States against attacking Iran and said it opposes pressuring Tehran with further sanctions beyond the measures approved in four U.N. Security Council resolutions, the most recent in 2010.

(AP Photo/Ben Margot)

(AP) ? Two more Yosemite National Park visitors have been found with a mouse-borne virus blamed for the deaths of two people, bringing the total number of infections to six, state health officials said Thursday.

Anita Gore, a spokeswoman for California Department of Public Health, said the discoveries were made through the agency's investigation into cases of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome at the famed park.

The infections spurred park officials to close 91 tent cabins at Curry Village in Yosemite Valley, where five of the six infections occurred. Gore said one of the infected people may have been in another area of the park.

"Our investigation is trying to determine which area of the park that person visited," Gore said.

Over the past three weeks, two people have died of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome after staying in cabins at Curry Village in Yosemite Valley.

Park officials said the double-walled design of the cabins that were closed Tuesday made it easy for mice to nest between the walls. The disease is carried in the feces, urine and saliva of deer mice and other rodents.

The two that died had stayed the so-called "Signature" cabins. Mike Gauthier, Yosemite chief of staff, said the design of the luxury cabins that are new to the park allowed for rodent infestation.

"We just weren't aware that design would lead to it," he said.

The illness begins as flu-like symptoms but can quickly affect the lungs. It can take up to six weeks to incubate. Five of the people who fell ill are known to have stayed in the tent cabins in June or July, and warnings have gone out to visitors who stayed in Curry Village in June, July or August.

The hantavirus outbreak occurred despite efforts by park officials to step up protection efforts last April. A 2010 report from the state health department warned park officials that rodent inspection efforts should be increased after a visitor to the Tuolumne Meadows area of the park fell ill.

The new hantavirus policy, enacted April 25, was designed to provide a safe place, "free from recognized hazards that may cause serious physical harm or death."

It came after the state report revealed that 18 percent of mice trapped for testing at various locations around the park were positive for hantavirus. The report said park officials should take steps to prevent mice from entering areas where people sleep.

"Inspections for rodent infestations and appropriate exclusion efforts, particularly for buildings where people sleep, should be enhanced," it said.

"We worked with Yosemite to evaluate risk and make recommendations to reduce the possibility of transmission to people," added Vicki Kramer, chief of the health department's vector-borne disease section. "That included reducing the number of mice, and excluding them from structures."

In 2009, the park installed the 91 new, higher-end cabins to replace some that had been closed or damaged after parts of Curry Village, which sits below the 3,000-foot Glacier Point promontory, were determined to be in a rock-fall hazard zone.

The new cabins have canvas exteriors and drywall or plywood inside, with insulation in between. Park officials found this week when they tried to shore up some of the cabins that mice had built nests in the walls.

The deer mice most prone to carrying the virus can squeeze through holes just one-quarter-inch in diameter. They are distinguished from solid-colored house mice by their white bellies and gray and brown bodies.

"Those cabins were all immediately investigated and cleaned when initial reports came out," Gauthier said. "But we want to be extra sure and not take any chances."

Yosemite's hantavirus plan also calls for awareness training of park employees and prescribes protective measures and equipment to reduce exposure.

"That's been a clear part of our messaging. My understanding is we did implement all of the measures of those recommendations," Gauthier said.

The state concurs that officials in Yosemite took steps to deal with potential hantavirus exposure, but there are limitations, given the location.

"Yosemite, to their credit, has taken quite a few steps to address this," Kramer said. "But it's a wilderness area and these buildings aren't going to be tight. It's impossible to get rid of the deer mice, so there is going to be some risk to being in a wilderness area."

Meanwhile, the park sent warning emails and letters Wednesday to another 1,000 people who stayed in tent cabins, after officials found that a computer glitch had stopped the notices from going out with the original 1,700 warnings Monday. The warning says anyone with flu-like symptoms or respiratory problems should seek immediate medical attention.

In 2011, half of the 24 U.S. hantavirus cases ended in death. But since 1993, when the virus first was identified, the average death rate is 36.39 percent, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Most of the nearly 600 cases reported since 1993 have been in New Mexico, Colorado, Washington, Arizona and California. Most often they are isolated, so having this cluster of cases from a small area in Yosemite has perplexed public health officials.

The federal government has two epidemiologists working in the park. They are trapping mice and rodents in an effort to determine how much of the population carries the virus and to see whether there are more mice in Yosemite Valley this year than in other years.

Kramer warned people never to sweep or vacuum mouse droppings. Instead, spray them with a mixture of bleach and water then wipe it up with paper towels or a mop.

Data Stories: Annicka Campbell on the Digital Love Project

August 31st, 2012

While I was perusing social data proposals for SXSW panels, I came across the Digital Love Project submission. ?The Digital Love Project is a study of the full life cycle of romantic partnerships through ethnographic analysis of digital-social picture and video sharing. Through review of thousands of visual-social data points ? from first glance to ultimately tying the knot ? we observe trends about romantic partnerships that change the way we think about driving relevance.? I thought this would make a great Data Story, so I reached out to one of the researchers, Annicka Campbell of SapientNitro, for an interview.?

1. What was the genesis of deciding to do the Digital Love Project?

My co-author Melissa Read and I both have backgrounds in the social sciences ? I was trained as an anthropologist, and Melissa has a PhD in digital marketing psychology. We?re both fascinated by the behavioral implications of social media, and so a few months ago we decided to embark on an ethnographic analysis of romantic partnerships as expressed through social. Our theory was that our findings would illuminate new ways for marketers to build more meaningful relationships and experiences for consumers online. It?s been a pretty fun (and often funny) experience, and we?re hoping that this combination of marketing insight and humor could translate really well for SXSW Interactive attendees.

2. How has displaying relationships on social media changed how people behave?

Great question. Since the term ?relationship? is so broad, we?ve focused on analyzing people in serious romantic relationships. We found that the relationship sharing process has become somewhat standardized; we identified a set of relationship milestones that couples are almost expected to share in social. This could mean posting joint vlogs or ?selfies,? crowdsourcing engagement proposals, or having wedding attendees post with a customized hashtag. We?ve even seen instances of people updating their Facebook relationship statuses at the alter, which is obviously on the far end of the spectrum. Call them the digital rules of engagement, perhaps. We actually think that these behaviors are making romantic relationships more interactive and collaborative than ever before. Of course, there can be negative implications of this behavior, as well.

3. What social media publishers get the most love from those in love? What channels are people using to display their love?

This is such a great question. What we?ve found is that it often hinges on age ? age of those in-love, and the age of the relationship. For teenagers, tools like Tumblr and Facebook provide a very public space to flirt and date in the passive presence of their friends, which I think is really important at that age. What really surprised us is that this is also true for more mature people.

Right now, we?re really focusing on the impact of geo-location in romantic relationships in our analysis. A few years ago I met an ex-boyfriend through Twitter?s ?Nearby Tweets? feature. It was really convenient, initially, because he lived across the street from me! Of course, when we broke up, the geolocation API haunted me every time I left my apartment (at least for a few weeks).

Melissa Read of the Digital Love Project

Melissa Read (Ph.D) of the Digital Love Project

4. By studying Facebook relationship changes, researchers were able to find out that breakups spiked highest around the holidays. What are some of the interesting takeaways you?ve learned about relationships by studying them online?

I loved the findings of David McCandless and Lee Byron?s project ? and of course, how beautifully those findings were visualized. Some of what we?ve found is similar, particularly during wedding season, back-to-school season, and spring break.

We also found that social media is being used a feedback tool for people in relationships. This might mean instagramming a photo of a dinner cooked together as a way to express appreciation to them. Conversely, this could also mean using Facebook to give negative feedback to your significant other. I?m fascinated by the way some couples use social media tools like Tumblr as sort of a ?relationship backchannel? where they document and discuss the life they share together, with both their online and offlline friends. I think that our long national obsession with the negative effects of oversharing and narcissism online is passing. We increasingly view social media as tools to grow meaningful relationships, and perhaps even contribute something of value to our culture. Just look at Facebook introducing a same-sex marriage status option a few months ago.

5. What do you want people to take away from what you learned, especially marketers? How do marketers reach in-love couples besides targeting wedding ads at the newly engaged?

We?ve found that there are very tactical takeaways for marketers as it relates to engaged couples. As the economy continues to improve, we?ve seen that the wedding industry has really rebounded, as well ? we spend $74 billion dollars per year on weddings, and that fact alone has obvious implications for marketers within that industry. We?re seeing event marketers using Pinterest to drive sales, planners using tools like Evernote to make the planning process more collaborative, and photographers incorporating Instagram into their toolkit.

Again, the tactical implications for that industry are interesting, but we?re trying to think even bigger. The idea that social media are being used as to establish, build and optimize romantic relationships in new and innovative ways ? well, switch out ?romantic relationships? with ?consumer-brand relationships? and we have the beginning of a really interesting discussion

Today is the last day for SXSW panel voting, so if this is a topic that interests you, be sure to get your vote in for the Digital Love Project.?

Answer: Who Made the Sculpture? [Video]

Answer: Who Made the Sculpture?Daniel Russell knows how to find the answers to questions you can't get to with a simple Google query. In his weekly Search Research column, Russell issues a search challenge, then follows up later in the week with his solution?using whatever search technology and methodology fits the bill. This week's challenge: who made the sculpture?

I thought this was going to be a difficult search, but the Challengers proved me wrong! Most of you solved this in 1 to 3 minutes, which is a great time!
Answer: Who Made the Sculpture?

The I way solved this problem was via Video search.

Since this is a kinetic sculpture, I figured that I wasn't the only one to take a video of this. I also thought that Image search might be a bit tricky. So, searching in Google Videos for [ flip animated sculpture airport ] leads quickly to an instantly recognizable video of "Cloud."

Once you know its name you can find other lovely videos. This second video turns out to have all kinds of information, including a link in the comments field to the Troika website, and from there you can answer all of the questions. If we jump to their web page about the sculpture: (extracted from that page...)

Troika [who are: Eva Rucki, Conny Freyer, Sebastien Noe ] was commissioned by Artwise Curators to create a signature piece for the entrance of the new British Airways luxury lounges in Heathrow Terminal 5.

In response, we created 'Cloud', a five meter long digital sculpture whose surface is covered with 4638 flip-dots that can be individually addressed by a computer to animate the entire skin of the sculpture.

Flip-dots were conventionally used in the 70s and 80s to create signs in train-stations and airports. By audibly flipping between black and silver, the flip-dots create mesmerizing waves as they chase across the surface of Cloud. Reflecting its surrounding colours, the mechanical mass is transformed into an organic form that appears to come alive, shimmering and flirting with the onlookers that pass by.

The sculpture is located in Terminal 5 in the atrium hall that leads to the British Airways First Class Lounges.

The brief from British Airways was open and simple: create a signature piece that marks the entrance to the First Class Lounges and signifies the transition between the busy shopping floor and the calm and serenity of the lounges. Working from the idea of clouds and the contrast between the busy, hectic airport experience and the calm, luminous and ethereal world that we discover as we fly through this dense layer we came up with the basic metaphor, atmosphere and form of the installation.

...one of our inspirations came from the old electromagnetic flip-dots that were used in railway and airport signs from the mid 70s. Those signs, with their characteristic flicking noise that instantly invokes the idea of travel, represent to us a golden age of technology when analogue and digital started to merge...

More info: http://troika.uk.com/cloud

Search Lessons: I have to admit that there were many, many different ways to solve this problem.

Here are some of the successful queries that searchers used:

[ airport terminal sculpture aluminium ]
[ airport hanging electronic sculpture ]
[ mirror sculpture airport ]
[ airport sculpture flipping discs ]
[ airport sculpture silver discs ]

Clearly, having the search terms "airport" and "sculpture" in the query was important. How you described the kinetic aspect or the makeup of the discs (mirror, aluminum, flipping) all led to the same places.

But the lesson is clear: Use the information you have as a base, and then vary the descriptive terms as a way to zero in on what you're looking for. You KNOW that it's a sculpture in an airport?but you don't know how someone might write about the flipping discs. (Would they say "disks" or "circles" or "flipdots" or...)

And finally, kudos to everyone who listened to the sound and figured out it was British Air. I'm impressed. I was there, and it wasn't clear that *I* understood what they were saying! Great sleuthing!

Search on!

Thursday Apple Rumors: Apple Launches iPhone 4S Buyback

? ?

daily apple rumors AAPLHere are your Apple rumors and AAPL news items for today:

Unload That Old iPhone: With its next generation iPhone widely expected to be unveiled next month, Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL)?will purchase existing iPhone 4S models, Macworld notes. The company will pay about $285 for a 16GB iPhone 4S and as much as $345 for a white 64GB model ? provided the phone is in good condition. But users who sell Apple their old phones won?t get cash. Instead, they will receive a gift card for the amount that can be used ? where else? ? at Apple Stores. Wireless carriers, including Sprint (NYSE:S), Verizon (NYSE:VZ) and AT&T (NYSE:T), are also promoting buyback programs for the iPhone 4S, hoping to persuade consumers to upgrade to the new iPhone when it debuts. Buyback prices are likely to remain high until the new iPhone?is revealed,?after which they typically fall.

Apple History on the Block: An Apple-1 computer will be auctioned off at Christie?s London auction house on October 9, PC Magazine reports. Only 200 Apple-1?s were built by the company, each assembled by hand. The machine ? which came with 8K of memory ? was designed and assembled by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. When?it originally hit the market, the Apple-1 retailed for $666.66. That?s a bargain compared to the $127,000 it is expected to sell for at auction. With Apple?s share price soaring and a new iPhone to be unveiled next month, collectors are snapping up company memorabilia for increasing prices. In June, an Apple-1 motherboard was auctioned at Sotheby?s for $374,500.

No UAV Tracking: Apple has rejected an iPhone app that would notify users whenever news sources indicate that a U.S. drone has killed people with a missile strike, Wired notes. The app, called Drones+, has been rejected for placement in the App Store three times,?with Apple citing a variety of reasons for its exclusion ranging from terming it ?not useful? to describing its content as ?objectionable and crude.? The apps developer says Drones+ doesn?t show images of the drone strikes. It simply uses the data from Britain?s Bureau of Investigative Journalism to post alerts of deadly drone strikes and note the location on a map. The U.S. has employed unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with missiles to carryout military operations against suspected terrorist groups in Afghanistan, Somalia and Pakistan.

EU probes Ryanair's bid to take over Aer Lingus

BRUSSELS (AP) ? The European Commission decided Wednesday to launch an in-depth investigation into whether Irish airline Ryanair's proposed takeover of rival Aer Lingus would hinder competition, a spokesman said.

The Commission must decide by Jan. 14 whether or not to block the proposed deal, said Simon O'Connor, a spokesman for the Commission, which is the executive branch of the European Union.

"The Commission's preliminary investigation into the proposed takeover indicated potential competition concerns," O'Connor said.

He noted that Ryan Air and Aer Lingus are the main airlines operating out of Dublin, and there are many routes between Dublin and other European cities that are served only by those two airlines.

However, he said the Commission's decision to begin a full investigation did not prejudge its conclusions.

Ryanair, the low-cost Irish airline, has made a bid for Aer Lingus valuing the airline at about ?700 million ($878.36 million). Aer Lingus has written to shareholders urging them to reject the bid.

Ryanair issued a statement Wednesday saying only that its offer lapsed following the Commission's decision, in accordance with takeover rules. But it said it intended to re-bid for Aer Lingus if the Commission cleared the way for the merger.

Aer Lingus issued a statement supporting the Commission's decision, noting that Ryanair's first attempt to take over Aer Lingus was prohibited in 2007 on competition grounds. Ryanair abandoned its second bid in 2008 after too few shareholders took up the offer.

"Aer Lingus is a much stronger airline today than it was at the time of the previous Ryanair offers and is Ryanair's only significant competitor on the vast majority of Irish air routes," the Aer Lingus statement said. "The number of routes into and out of Ireland on which Aer Lingus and Ryanair compete has sharply increased since 2007. The reasons for prohibition are therefore even stronger than before."

In June, Ryanair offered ?1.30 ($1.65) per share for its main Irish rival, its third bid since Aer Lingus' 2006 flotation. Ryanair is already Aer Lingus' biggest shareholder with a nearly 30 percent stake, the government second with 25 percent.

Air Lingus says that even Ryanair's minority shareholding is "contrary to the interests of consumers and the majority of our shareholders."

Aer Lingus has struggled in recent years to slash costs sufficiently to compete with Ryanair, which is Europe's fastest-growing airline. It has suffered regular battles with labor unions, whereas Ryanair doesn't recognize them. But it did post a modest profit last year and has been expanding its own European short-haul network.

Ryanair chief executive Michael O'Leary argues that the government must sell Aer Lingus because it needs the cash, and would be far better off selling to another Irish company. The other potential suitor, Etihad Airways of the United Arab Emirates, this year bought a 3 percent stake in Aer Lingus and has expressed interest in the government holding.

Christie's blunt style tested in convention speech

(AP) ? Blunt and brash, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie would seem the perfect Republican to skewer President Barack Obama and fire up thousands of GOP loyalists.

That's exactly what he was expected to do late Tuesday when he delivers the keynote address before the Republican National Convention.

His mission: making the case against Obama.

Christie's outspoken style has made him a Republican Party star and helped earn him the plum, prime-time speaking spot.

He rocketed to GOP stardom in 2009, winning the Democratic-heavy Eastern state the year after Obama was elected and establishing a reputation as confrontational to big labor and public employees.

Indeed, early in last year's GOP nominating campaign, Republicans uninspired by Romney aggressively urged Christie to seek the nomination.

New York delegate David Shimkin said he admired Christie's frankness.

"He doesn't seem to have a filter. A lot of candidates don't do that," Shimkin said of Christie.

As keynote speaker, Christie is tasked with making the opening pitch for presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who remains something of a mystery to voters even though polls show him locked in a close contest with Obama.

Christie considered running for the nomination himself but months ago decided to endorse Romney, who made a personal entreaty for Christie's support as the GOP primaries were getting under way.

Christie on Tuesday waved off a published report that he had turned down an offer to be Romney's running mate because he didn't think Romney could win in November.

"Not only do I believe he can win, I think he will win," Christie told "CBS This Morning."

Temperamentally and stylistically the opposite of the buttoned-up Romney, Christie acknowledged the former Massachusetts governor has work to do to close the sale with some voters, especially women.

"Mitt Romney's going to have to win this campaign. He's going to have to let the American people see who he is," Christie said on ABC's "Good Morning America," adding that Romney's choice of Paul Ryan as his running mate had brought more energy to the ticket.

After toppling Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine in 2009, national Republicans embraced Christie for his tough talk on fiscal matters and for taking on public employee unions, especially teachers. Videos of Christie berating teachers at town hall meetings quickly went viral, giving Christie a large national audience. Critics dubbed him "Governor YouTube," suggesting he was more interested in getting publicity for himself than for improving New Jersey's finances.

Christie has disclosed little about he will say in the speech, but said it would include a discussion of "the New Jersey experience and what the experience might mean for the country in terms of governing and hard choices."

That drew a jeer from Democrats, who said viewers shouldn't buy Christie's claim of a "Jersey comeback." They pointed to economic data showing the state still grappling with weak employment and high property taxes.

"Chris Christie is taking the stage in Tampa tonight to talk about his favorite topic: himself," state Assemblyman John Wisniewski told reporters during a conference call. "Gov. Christie's record in New Jersey is certainly not a model for our nation, and the people in Tampa should know that."

Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, chairman of the Democratic Governors Association and a likely 2016 presidential contender, went further, saying he expected Christie to deliver an "angry, Don Rickles keynote extolling the virtues of their candidate, Mitt Romney, who had one of the worst job creation rates in the nation."

Christie is popular among convention delegates, many of whom said they would have welcomed a Christie presidential candidacy.

"I just love him," said Ohio delegate Sandy Barber. "He's plain-talking. He's himself. He's someone who lets his personality come through."

Frankly speaking, it is unlikely for the workforce to work in a company that has pitiable work ambiance and facilities. So, as a business owner, it is important to ensure that the office meets the employee's needs.

Serviced offices in Manchester are the types of offices that are located in good setting and boasts of work-friendly ambiance and facilities. Such establishments can be rented for a short period of time on a contract basis and one can surrender the house when the matter of transfer or shifting comes. A person is required to pay the required rent for every month and the price includes all the costs such as rent, service charges, furniture etc.

Serviced Offices Manchester -- Reasons behind choosing

Most of the business owners in Manchester prefer to rent a space in serviced offices Manchester. These establishments serve handy for those who are looking for company expansion or contraction. Business that demands extra large space or small floor can make good use of these offices. Apart from the flexibility, what deserves special mentioning about the offices is that it lets tenants get comprehensive services. A tenant or better to say a business house can make good use of the pre-installed or available items or facilities to operate their business in a nice way.

Serviced Offices Manchester -- A Cursory Glance At Its Benefits

If you are considering renting a serviced office space in Manchester for your business, it is necessary to take into account its viable benefits:

Saves Time & Effort

One of the notable benefits of serviced office space is that the office operator can easily manage the IT infrastructure in a proper way. This feature saves ample time and effort as you don't need to spend hours contacting your IT support, whenever there are any technical issues. Though a company has its own computers, but one can expect a ready network. Mind you, there are a handful of operators who offer basic IT services or shared network.

Flexibility

Flexibility is the key phrase for many businesses and the use of serviced offices gives you that. If the area in Manchester, where you are renting the office becomes less favorable for the business to operate, you can always end the contract with that property owner, and look for more business friendly area to relocate whenever necessary.

Cost cutting

Serviced offices keep the cost down, letting you invest the extras in other areas of business. At the time of renting traditional office spaces, price is charged based on per square foot while serviced offices in Manchester are priced per workstation. This serves cost-effective enough. Another good thing about serviced office spaces is that multiple features are available at substantial amount and there is no fluctuation of prices.

So, if you are planning to rent serviced offices in Manchester for your business over having to buy one outright, there seems no better choice than rented serviced offices.

HBT: Back to DL for Red Sox's Big Papi

As expected the Red Sox have placed David Ortiz back on the disabled list just one game after returning from an Achilles? tendon injury.

Ortiz went 2-for-4 with a double in that one game, but aggravated the injury that kept him out for more than a month the first time around and said afterward: ?I can?t really play like this.?

He could be shut down for the season if some rest and a cortisone injection don?t do the trick, although this morning manager Bobby Valentine told Alex Speier of WEEI.com that the Red Sox ?have the expectation he?ll be back.?

When healthy enough to be in the lineup Ortiz has had one of his best seasons at age 36 and with free agency around the corner, hitting .318 with 23 homers in 90 games to lead the league with a .611 slugging percentage and 1.026 OPS. It?s his first time with an OPS above 1.000 since 2007 and the third-highest mark of his career.

Selma Times-Journal: Economic study shows outdoors are big ...

Economic study shows outdoors are big business

Published 12:39am Sunday, August 12, 2012

By Robert Hudson

The Selma Times-Journal

For residents of Alabama?s Black Belt, the outdoor recreational activities, such as hunting and fishing, are near and dear to their heart and a crucial part of their very lives.

One organization recently did a study to show just how important the outdoors is to the Black Belt.

Alabama Black Belt Adventures Association recently released its findings on the economic impact that the Black Belt?s hunting, fishing and recreational activities have on Alabama?s economy.

Pam Swanner, project director with Alabama Black Belt Adventures, said the study was done to find out just how important the industry is to the area and come up with ways to continue to capitalize on it.

?This initiative was launched to harness the outdoor recreational opportunities in the region, and understanding and realizing that it is the economic development tool for the area,? Swanner said. ?There?s not a lot of industry, not a lot of smokestacks [in the area], but we do have an abundance of wildlife and recreational opportunities ? not just the aggressive sports activities, such as hunting and fishing, but also passive recreation like canoe trips down the Alabama River or bird watching, hiking or horseback riding. There?s just a plethora of outdoor recreational opportunity in this region.?

Swanner added the study was done to come up with concrete numbers for the Black Belt region, specifically in order to continue harnessing those resources.

?We?ve known for a long time that the outdoor recreation has been a sustainable economic development tool for the citizens in this area and we wanted to have some kind of a basis to support those ideas that it does support the region,? Swanner said. ?A number of national studies have been conducted for a number of years now and it was always national specific and each individual state had their own particular economic impact study associated with that study, but we wanted to fine tune it to the Black Belt region because we do know that if you?re going hunting in Alabama, you?re going to go to the Black Belt region. Fishing is also an opportunity. So we wanted to harness that, put it into a report format that gives us the numbers that we like to work with and it also gives us a starting point to measure our success as we move forward with this initiative.?

According to the study, about 456,290 hunters and anglers in the Black Belt spend $3,224,894 a day on their respective hobbies.

That?s compared to a total of 707,000 hunters and anglers that spend $5 million a day in the entire state.

The study goes on to say that sportsmen?s spending in the Black Belt credits an estimated 10,989 jobs, with salaries and wages of $283 million and state and local taxes of $60 million, adding the annual spending by Black Belt sportsmen has a direct and indirect impact of $972 million. That is more than Alabama?s catfish and peanut industries produce each year.

Roundtree Outdoors owner Chet Chappelle said it?s no surprise local outdoorsmen are so dedicated to the hobby.

?I feel like the local people around here in the Black Belt are going to spend the money. That?s a hobby that they love and they?re going to spend the money to support that hobby and I think it?s a great hobby,? Chappelle said. ?I think being in the outdoors is something that I think every family should do. It?s something good. Being with nature, it?s just a relaxing atmosphere getting away from the city and the cars and the cellphones and the computers and stuff, and just enjoying God?s creation.?

Chappelle added the outdoors industry is so important to the area considering that hunters, anglers and others come from all around to visit the Black Belt and they usually buy gas and stay in hotels in the area among other things.

?It?s very important, from the City Marina to your local hunting lodges and everything. It plays a huge impact for your local economy,? Chappelle said. ?You have people who come from all over the United States to come to this little area here in central Alabama just to deer hunt. I think it?s very big.?

Drug Tests For Cannabis Exposure Not Advisable For Infants, Study ...

Drug Tests For Cannabis Exposure Not Advisable For Infants, Study SaysSalt Lake City, UT--(ENEWSPF)--August 23, 2012. ?False positive drug test results for cannabis are far more common to occur in infant urine samples than in those provided by non-infants, according to a study published online in the journal Clinical Chemistry.

Researchers at the University of Utah School of Medicine and ARUP drug testing laboratories in Salt Lake City investigated the rate of unconfirmed 'positive' immunoassay test results in infant and non-infant urine samples over a 52-week period.

Authors reported that positive tests for carboxy THC, a byproduct of THC screened for in immunoassay urine tests, were 59 times less likely to be confirmed in infant urine compared to non-infant urine samples. Overall, 47 percent of the infant 'positive' immunoassay urine samples evaluated did not test for the presence of carboxy THC when confirmatory assay measures were later performed.

Immunoassay tests rely on the use of antibodies (proteins that will react to a particular substance or a group of very similar substances) and document whether a specific reaction occurs. Therefore, a 'positive' result on an immunoassay test presumes that a certain quantity of a particular substance may be present in the sample, but it does not actually identify the presence of the substance itself. A more specific chemical test, known as chromatography, must be performed in order to confirm any preliminary analytical test results. Samples that test positive on the presumptive immunoassay test, but then later test negative on the confirmatory test are know as false positives.

In April, researchers at the University of North Carolina reported that chemicals present in various baby wash products, including Johnson's Head-to-Toe Baby Wash and CVS Baby Wash, frequently cross-react with the immunoassay test to cause 'false positive' results for carboxy THC. However, in this latest study, none of the unconfirmed immunoassay test results were due to contaminants from baby wash soaps.

Researchers concluded: "Until the compounds contributing to positive urine screen results in infants are identified, we encourage the use of alternative specimens for the detection and investigation of neonatal exposure to cannabinoids. Screen-positive cannabinoid results from infant samples should not be reported without confirmation or appropriate consultation, because they cannot currently be interpreted."

Infants may be drug tested in situations where their mothers are suspected of consuming illicit substances during pregnancy or have tested positive for illicit substances themselves. However, critics of infant drug testing argue that the hospital staff's decision regarding whether to conduct such tests is often subjective and potentially discriminatory. For example, a 2007 study published in the Journal of Women's Health reported that "black women and their newborns were 1.5 times more likely to be tested for illicit drugs as non-black women," after controlling for obstetrical conditions and socio-demographic factors, such as single marital status or a lack of health insurance.

Twelve states legally define prenatal exposure to any illegal drug as child abuse.

Full text of the study, "Unresolved discrepancies between cannabinoid test results for infant urine," appears in the journal Clinical Chemistry.

All About The Water Heater Replacement | Triple A Gems

There are some facts that a person should think about when it comes to the water heater replacement. First off, the person should remember that H2O heating accounts to about eleven percent of the annual energy cost. Properly replacing the said device will help in saving cost of up to ten percent.

For the savings that the person can acquire, he can properly have this if he sets his heaters to at least 120 degrees instead of the usual 140 degrees. Even if that setting is lower than average, the person should not be able to feel a significant difference with the shower. The plates and other silverware will still be sterilized this way as well.

When replacing the model, it is highly necessary to find a gas model. The gas model may cost more than the electric models but it will definitely allow him to save an amount of up to a hundred dollars in one year when it comes to the energy bill. There are also times when the person will have to consider going solar.

Going solar also has some benefits for the person. There are lots of states which offer financial incentives to those people who are using various solar technologies. People should think about increasing the cost effectiveness of the said device. There are also those tax credits for the solar heating.

Speaking of the tax credits, there is an act that covers this. The act is called the ARRA or the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. This will provide the homeowner with at least a thirty percent of tax credit for the new heaters installed. The tax credit item, however, is just applied to those existing homes and not new construction.

There are three points that should be considered when it comes to this. First of all, the cap for the tax credit is 1,500 dollars. This is on the collective elements for home improvement other than the geothermal heat pumps, solar photovoltaic, solar hot water heating, and fuel cell system. Each of the said system should have no cap as well.

There are some exclusions to the said act, though. For example, there are no tax credits applicable to any exterior weatherization improvements. This includes the windows, the doors, and the insulation. If the person will have the said items, he will have to pay for his own costs.

Another point to consider is the cap that was stipulated in the said act. If the person has reached his cap which is 1,500 dollars in the previous year, he will not become eligible for any additional tax credits for that year. This is an important point to consider when it comes to the said act since this will matter in calculating his finances.

He should check out the criteria when it comes to the water heater replacement. It is a must to meet the tax credit requirements for it. By following the requirements, it will surely help him in his finances in the future. His credentials should be enough to meet the requirements as well.

Why Adobe Premiere Does Not Edit CinemaDNG ... - Cinescopophilia

?

So you used to edit in Final Cut and then jumped ship to the hot shinny new hipster toy called Adobe Premiere Pro 6, and you want that Blackmagic Cinema Camera so bad don?t you? Or perhaps your?e thinking about filming with any one of a number of new cameras coming out that allow the option of recording your footage in CinemaDNG. Your workflow all sorted then? Shoot on the BMCC/ikonoskop/Digital Bolex/KineRAW/Weisscam and copy the uncompressed RAW images in CinemaDNG format files into Adobe Premiere Pro for an edit session, pump out the video to Vimeo and wait for the pats on the back, right.
Noooooooo?? Right about now you find out that CinemaDNG does not edit in Premiere Pro natively.

From Todd Kopriva one of the Adobe team members:

We got very little interest from our users for CinemaDNG. The BlackMagic camera surprised us at NAB as much as it surprised anyone.

If we find that a lot of people are using that camera and are asking us to natively import CinemaDNG files in Premiere Pro, then we?ll look into it.
For now, you can import CinemaDNG files into After Effects through the Camera Raw plug-in, which comes with After Effects. The performance is very poor, though, which is one of the reasons that we haven?t been moving forward with CinemaDNG in Premiere Pro.

When pushed as to why an Adobe product like CinemaDNG would not work straight out of the box in Premiere Pro, Todd replied:

I think that you?re over-estimating how much the format is ?our? format. We did some early work on the format and then made it an open-source format for others to develop as they saw fit. We didn?t push it and don?t intend to do so, any more than we would for any other open standard. It has received very little uptake, with only a couple of recent exceptions.
In the meantime, many competing formats have been taken up with great success, and we need to focus our limited resources on making sure that formats that are already very popular are supported as well as possible.

So double up on your storage space and take the phone off the hook, as you just lost money to thirsty double handling Gigabytes and any spare time you ever had just to edit a very simple file.

Well one way to save the day for now if you still want to use Adobe to edit CinemaDNG, is by adopting a workflow set out by Theo Lipfert:

If you really require your newly bought CinemaDNG capable camera to work in Premiere Pro then send Adobe a brief note letting them know just that. The more people that write to Adobe asking for CinemaDNG to work in Premiere Pro natively the quicker it might just happen.

Fill out the Adobe Wish List to get your request heard.

Also download CinemaDNG Workflow from Adobe to help you with your editing process.

If you like the After Effects to FCP route instead of Premiere then try this CinemaDNG workflow by Billy from Art War Entertainment:

If Adobe is not your first choice for editing CinemaDNG then try a FCP and Resolve workflow thanks to Decoy studios:

Of course if you do buy the Blackmagic Cinema Camera then happy happy joy joy it comes with DaVinci Resolve free of charge.
You may also like to try CineForm, MXF4MAC, DanCad3D, and course try Adobe LightRoom, to de-Bayer the DNG frames with colour correction and save the frames into other file formats such as ProRes for use with Adobe Premiere Pro.

Enjoy!

Zookeeper Don McFarlane weighs and measures an African Millipede during the zoo's annual weigh-in on Aug. 22.

ZSL?s Zoological Director, David Field says: ?We need to know the vital statistics of every animal at the Zoo ? however big or small."

Zookeepers at the London Zoo are responsible for more than 16,000 animals, spending countless hours recording the weight and measurements of each and every animal, including penguins, meerkats, lions and owls.??The measurements are collated in the Zoological Information Management System, from which zoologists can use the data to compare information on thousands of endangered species.

?This information helps us to monitor their health, their diets and their general well-being. By sharing it with other zoos and conservationists, we can use this knowledge to protect wild animals, and use it to assess their health, their behaviours and even their ages,? said Field.

NYPD workers disciplined for racist West Indian Day parade Facebook posts

The NYPD has disciplined 17 employees over racist and offensive remarks on a Facebook page about revelers at last year?s West Indian American Day Parade.

The comments referred to ?savages? and ?animals.? One person wrote, ?Let them kill each other.?

The raucous annual parade is a heavily policed event. It?s one of the city?s largest outdoors events and has been marred by violence in some years.

Three shootings were tied to the parade in 2011, and police seized 14 guns during the celebration the night before the parade.

Police spokesman Paul Browne tells The New York Times (http://nyti.ms/RFsaPj ) that among the 17 employees were four police officers who still face departmental trials on charges of ?conduct prejudicial to the good order of the police department.?
