David Koechner Talks Piranha 3DD

In "Piranha 3DD," which hits theaters this Friday, the community of Lake Victoria is besieged by another swarm of prehistoric, man-eating fish. In the first film, it was drunken spring breakers who fell victim to the gory attacks. This time around, it's the partygoers at the Lake's "Adults Only" water park Big Wet (which happens to be watched over by stripper lifeguards and celebrity spokesman David Hasselhoff). The piranha invade thanks to an illegal river pump OK'd by the park's dirtbag owner, Chet, played by none other than "that guy!" comedic scene-stealer David Koechner. (You might remember him as the sleazy Todd Packer on "The Office" or the sleazy boss from "Waiting..." or the sleazy boss from "Final Destination 5.")

Koechner spoke with Moviefone and explained how to convincingly portray a slimeball that unwittingly unleashes a stomach-churning monster massacre -- and how to do it while not being distracted by the constant on-set nudity. He also sheds a few more details on his other big project: re-assembling with the Action 4 News Team for "Anchorman 2."

What exactly convinced you to sign onto "Piranha 3DD"?
A couple things. I like to work. I have a wife and five kids, so it?s always good to work. Number two, it?s something I haven?t done before. I like being able to hop from different types of projects and Dimension Films is such a great company. And it really appealed to me because I like being able to say I was in "Hannah Montana" and "Piranha 3DD."

The "Piranha" series is pretty infamous for its nudity. Did you avert your eyes on set or were you all-in for the experience?
I look at it like this: the female form is god?s art. I love it, I admire it, I honor it.

I'm a big horror junkie, but when I saw the first "Piranha 3D," even I wasn't prepared for how R-rated it was. You?re playing a sleazy proprietor of a water park that uses strippers and is called Big Wet, how exactly did you sell this project to your wife?
I said, ?Honey, daddy needs to go make money,? and she said "OK?. [Laughs] I?m always telling her exactly what?s in the script.

Was she in for any surprises when she saw it?
Not in this one. There?s a movie called "A Good Old Fashioned Orgy," and in the first scene I?m in... you see, there?s a woman who is um... riding me doggie-style wearing nothing. After she saw that movie, she was like ?Oh did you tell me about that??

How is David Hasslhoff when the cameras aren't rolling? Does he ever turn off that public persona of "The Hoff"?
I?d met David years ago, when he and I had done work on a sitcom. I?ve actually seen him out socially a couple of times and he?s a real sweetheart of a guy, really pleasant, bright, funny and he?s a stone-cold pro. I think he?s trading on a brand. He knows exactly what he is. This is show business. He get?s it.

Who do you channel to properly convey the character of Chet?
It?s not necessarily that you need to channel someone, but I think a guy like Chet, he?s very greedy, he?s selfish, he?s a bit lascivious and I would say every human being has those demons inside of them. So the challenge is to provide those kind of situations in your own life, into your character. Are you buying it? Cause we all know somebody who?s a horrible person.

You?ve always played a great "obnoxious" guy in comedies. What do you think it is that filmmakers keep seeing in you for those roles?
Once you do it, and they think you?ve done it well, they go ?Oh that?s what he does.? So for good or ill, that?s what you got.

Then what?s the character that filmmakers haven?t seen yet, and you know you would totally blow them away with?
Whatever?s next. No, I think at one of these points I?ll do a really intense drama that people will go, ?Oh I didn?t know he could do that.?

Since we?re talking about drama and "Piranha 3DD" is a Dimension film -- which is part of the Weinstein Company -- how would you say "Piranha 3DD" is similar to Weinstein's other big prestige project this year, "The Artist"?
My character?s clothes are black and white. [Laughs]

Obviously, this film has a very high body count. How do you deliver a fantastic on-screen death?
I?d say every actor?s dream is to have a death scene. Just enjoy it and make it believable.

Did you practice at home?
Since I was a kid.

Your big competition this weekend is "Snow White and The Huntsman." What would you say to Kristen Stewart?s legion of fans to convince them to forget about that movie and go and see "Piranha"?
I wouldn?t try and convince them. I?d say make sure you see two films this weekend.

I'd be remiss to not talk about "Anchorman 2." How many times do you anticipate being asked about it?
It has not stopped since the first movie went into theaters, and I hope it never does. I was speaking to Will and Steve and Paul when we were shooting, and it?s been the same for them. So I love it.

It?s still really early in the project, and it?s going to be a while before people see it. If you could say one thing to the rabid fan base to tide them over until it premieres, what would you say to them?
I would say, go see the teaser trailer playing before "The Dictator." Adam McKay has said it?s going to be centered around the next big change in news, after having females at the anchor desk. The next big event in the news was the cable news networks, the advent of 24-hour news.

You?ve shared the screen with so many fantastic comedians. Who has made you crack up the hardest?
That?s a tough one. I?ve worked with a lot of great people, it?s too hard. I will say onstage it?s hardest for me to keep it together with Matt Walsh, who is seen currently in "Veep" and was the doctor in "The Hangover." For whatever reason, he?s got my number without even trying; he just kills me. There were a couple scenes that were in "Wake Up Ron Burgundy" where Steve [Carell's] character changes and becomes the old lieutenant that used to guide us when we were all in Vietnam together. That?s a backstory we all came up with together and that was just too immense for me to hold it together. I was laughing every take.

Have we seen the last of your other notorious comedy project: "The Naked Trucker and T-Bones Show"?
Dave Gruber Allen ["The Naked Trucker"] moved to Utah to help his parents who are older, and so right now there are no plans to do anything. I love working with him and would love to do the concerts again. I got a movie idea that I would love to convince Dave to do one day, but we?ll see.

Kogan intros 10-inch Agora tablet with ICS in Australia, ships next month starting at $179

I designed an outdoor movie room in my space. ? The challenge was to use items you could find at Lowe?s Home Improvement in the most imaginative and creative way possible to redefine what an outdoor space could be. ? ?I chose to make use of outdoor furniture as screening chairs, stretched a painter?s tarp as a movie screen and strung string lights to add a little ambiance to the atmosphere. ?Cute, right?

My pal Kelly Bensimon came out to support me and here she is with a new product I?m helping to launch and develop right now called Green Planet Water. ? ?It?s one of the first 100% petroleum-free, BPA-free, commercially compostable bottled waters to come to market. ? ? PARIS (AP) ? Serena Williams lost in the first round of a major tournament for the first time in her career, falling to Virginie Razzano of France 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 Tuesday at the French Open.

The fifth-seeded Williams was two points from victory several times in the second set, including leading 5-1 in the tiebreaker. But Razzano won six straight points to force a third set, and then took control of the match.

"I made so many errors today, which isn't the game I was playing in the past," Williams said. "That's life."

Williams entered the day with a 46-0 record in first-round matches at Grand Slam tournaments. She had been looking for her 14th major title, and second at Roland Garros.

The 13-time Grand Slam champion had five break points in the final game, but she couldn't convert.

"I was just thinking, if I can break here we'll be back on serve," Williams said.

Razzano saved all five, and then converted her eighth match point to eliminate one of the tournament favorites.

"I had to dig deep against a great champion and you could see until the end that she gave away nothing," Razzano said. "I had to go and get the victory. I had to be mentally strong, and I gave my everything."

Earlier, Rafael Nadal began his quest for a record seventh French Open title in style, wearing a pink shirt and pink shoelaces.

He won easily, too.

The second-seeded Spaniard had little trouble against Simone Bolelli of Italy, winning 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 on Court Philippe Chatrier ? the same stadium where Nadal has won six of his 10 Grand Slam titles.

Nadal, who is tied with Bjorn Borg with six French Open titles, improved his record to 46-1 at Roland Garros. His only loss came in the fourth round in 2009, against Robin Soderling.

He's not worried about the record just yet, though.

"We are in the second round," Nadal said. "I have enough work to do thinking about the next round, and not think about if Bjorn will be here or if I'm going to play the final. That's day-by-day and we'll see."

Against Bolelli, Nadal made only 18 unforced errors, fewer than half as many as his opponent. From 2-2 in the first set, Nadal won eight straight games to take control.

"I think I did what I had to do today," Nadal said. "I played probably with less stress or nerves than in other first rounds in the past."

And after a short blip in the second set, Nadal won eight of the last nine games.

"I tried to play aggressive with the forehand, with the serve, but today I miss a lot," Bolelli said. "He's strong. I mean, I didn't have a chance to make the match even."

Fourth-seeded Andy Murray also advanced, beating Tatsuma Ito of Japan 6-1, 7-5, 6-0.

Maria Sharapova was nearly perfect in her match, winning all 12 games to produce a "double bagel." And Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova advanced by beating junior Wimbledon champion Ashleigh Barty 6-1, 6-2.

Sharapova routed Alexandra Cadantu of Romania 6-0, 6-0 on Court Suzanne Lenglen, needing just 48 minutes to advance to the second round. She finished the match with 18 winners, while Cadantu had zero, but had to save three break points.

"No matter how good or bad they're playing, you still have to win that match," Sharapova said. "It's always about who takes their chances."

Sharapova, who lost in this year's Australian Open final, is looking to complete a career Grand Slam by winning the title at Roland Garros.

The Russian has won the other three Grand Slam titles, but she has never reached the final at Roland Garros. Last year, however, she equaled her best result by making the semifinals.

"I feel like with every year I have improved and I enjoy it much more," Sharapova said. "I think I learn a lot more about the game and the point construction. I feel like I'm moving a lot better than I did years previously, which has helped me a lot in the recovery process within the point."

She moved well enough against Cadantu, a 22-year-old Romanian who was making her French Open debut.

"For me, to have that big crowd, it was a lot," Cadantu said after playing on the second biggest stadium at Roland Garros. "I enjoyed it a lot."

Kvitova lost the opening game in her match against the 16-year-old Barty, but then won six straight in the first set and again raced through the second set despite being broken once.

"She has a big serve with kicks and good forehand," Kvitova said of the Australian teen. "She has very good touch."

The left-handed Czech won her first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon last year, and then won the WTA Championships. Although she has yet to win a title in 2012, she is seeded fourth at Roland Garros and is expected to make it deep into the tournament.

Barty is the youngest player in the draw at the French Open, one of only eight teenagers entered. The Australian received a wild-card invitation to compete in Paris.

"It was tough out there today," Barty said. "I didn't play my best tennis, but she didn't allow me to. I was out there giving it my all, but unfortunately just didn't come out on top today."

The oldest player in the draw, 41-year-old Kimiko Date-Krumm of Japan, lost to 2010 French Open champion Francesca Schiavone of Italy 6-3, 6-1.

Is China poor? Key question at climate talks

BONN, Germany (AP) ? Another round of U.N. climate talks closed without resolving how to share the burden of curbing man-made global warming, mainly because countries don't agree on who is rich and who is poor.

China wants to maintain a decades-old division between developed and developing countries, bearing in mind that, historically, the West has released most of the heat-trapping gases that scientists say could cause catastrophic changes in climate.

But the U.S. and Europe insisted during the two-week talks that ended Friday in Bonn that the system doesn't reflect current economic realities and must change as work begins on a new global climate pact set to be completed in 2015.

"The notion that a simple binary system is going to be applicable going forward is no longer one that has much relevance to the way the world currently works," U.S. chief negotiator Jonathan Pershing said.

Countries like Qatar and Singapore are wealthier than the U.S. per capita but are still defined as developing countries under the classification used in the U.N. talks. So is China, the world's second largest economy.

Finding a new system that better reflects the world today, while also acknowledging the historical blame for greenhouse gas emissions, is the biggest challenge facing the U.N. process as it seeks a global response to climate change.

"That is a fundamental issue," said Henrik Harboe, Norway's chief climate negotiator. "Some want to keep the old division while we want to look at it in a more dynamic way."

The U.N. climate talks are based on the premise that industrialized countries must take the lead on climate change by committing to reducing emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. They are also expected to provide money to help poor countries grow in a sustainable way and to protect the most vulnerable nations from rising sea levels, droughts and other consequences of a warming world

Disputes on how to categorize countries going forward was behind much of the procedural wrangling that slowed down the talks in Bonn. Delegates failed to agree on an agenda until the last day, leaving most of the work for a bigger summit in Qatar in November.

A separate dispute between developing countries delayed the appointment of officials to steer the talks. That stalemate was also unlocked on the last day.

The slow pace frustrated climate activists who fear that there won't be enough political will to rein in emissions to avoid dangerous levels of warming in coming decades.

"The talk here doesn't match the action that science says is required," said Mohamed Adow, senior climate change adviser at Christian Aid.

China's lead negotiator Su Wei told The Associated Press that the proposed new deal, which would have binding commitments for all countries after 2020, must be based on the principle of "common but differentiated responsibility" enshrined in previous climate agreements.

"That means we still would continue the current division between developed and developing countries," Su said.

He said China is still a developing country because if you look at wealth per capita, it barely makes the world's top 100. More than 100 million Chinese live below the poverty line, which Beijing has defined as about $1 a day.

Still, Western officials say China's fast-growing energy needs and rising emissions mean it can no longer be off the hook in climate negotiations.

"We need to move into a system which is reflecting modern economic realities," EU negotiator Christian Pilgaard Zinglersen said.

In the early 1950s, China accounted for just 2 percent of global emissions while the U.S. accounted for more than 40 percent, according to Climate Analytics, a climate research group based in Potsdam, Germany.

Today China's share of global emissions exceeds 25 percent, while the U.S. share has fallen toward 20 percent.

China and its supporters reject blame for stalling the climate talks, saying it is the U.S. and other developed nations that are unwilling to live up to their obligations to cut carbon emissions.

The U.S. refused to join the only binding accord to limit emissions ? the 1997 Kyoto Protocol ? partly because it didn't include China.

Seyni Nafo, spokesman for a group of African countries in the climate talks, noted that the U.S. also said that joining Kyoto would harm the U.S. economy. Years later, the U.N. climate effort still has little support in the U.S. Congress, which includes outspoken climate skeptics.

"We are hoping that they will get on board this time, which is not a given," Nafo said.

The Human Barbie meets Domestic Violence Survivor! | Scarlett ...

After spending an evening perusing videos on YouTube, I came across a video that really made me think. These days very few things make me think, as it is very rare that they make me want get up and have a debate however this video, certainly did! The video in question was found on the YouTube channel of a woman dubbed ?the human barbie?, a woman who recently created quite a stir on television programme This Morning because she gave her 8 year old daughter vouchers for cosmetic surgery for her birthday. The woman I am referring to is Sarah Burge.

Sarah was the victim of a terrible campaign of domestic violence when she was younger; her face was beaten into an unrecognisable pulp, and so she (rightly so) had reconstructive surgery on her face to repair the damage inflicted by a man she once loved and trusted. Domestic violence is a disgusting and terrible thing, whilst the phrase connotes the idea that it happens in marriages within homes; that isn?t always the case. Domestic violence can occur in relationships where the two parties do not live together, and you don?t even have to have been with a person for a long period of time to be a victim of it.

?What I?d like to ask you Grace is, is whether you actually want to resurrect the old you in regards to the way that you looked, or would you like to re-invent somebody else and completely change the way that you look??

Domestic violence doesn?t just present in a physical manifestation; it also includes verbal abuse, and this can be just as detrimental to a person as physical violence. Whilst it is of great importance to heal the physical wounds caused by domestic violence; it is in my opinion more important (once the physical wounds have healed) to focus on the effect the violence has had on the mind of the victim. If you can strengthen the mind of a victim of domestic violence, there is a stronger chance they will be better equipped to leave the person causing the violence.

The video was uploaded via Sarah?s YouTube account on the 9^th?of May 2012, and it?s entitled??Sarah Burge meets Domestic Violence Survivor?; after watching various television programmes where Sarah is the interviewee, I was interested to see how she would come across in a video where the focus wasn?t on herself, and how she would fair in the role of the ?interviewer?.

I don?t know for certain, but there is something about the video that doesn?t sit right with me, and makes me believe it could have allegedly been filmed using an actress to play the domestic abuse survivor (This would make complete sense, as for a lot of domestic abuse victims as they feel it can be too dangerous to come forward for fear of repercussions. However there is no disclaimer in the video stating this). For a video that is supposed to be focusing on Grace Brown the survivor, there are a lot of dramatic close-ups of Sarah, and to me it comes across that this video may be a way for her to advocate the importance of plastic surgery in the road to recovery of a domestic violence survivor.

The message the video sends to victims of domestic violence is a little biased and leans heavily on the idea that you need plastic surgery and plastic surgery only to recover from domestic violence. In reality, focus should firstly be made on the mental health of the victim, and the recovery and re-building of self-esteem and mental image. Changing/mending the physical doesn?t help to heal the damage done inside a victim. Sarah also fails to ascertain whether Grace Brown has left her abusive partner or whether she has a safe place to live, she dives straight into ?What I?d like to ask you Grace is, is whether you actually want to resurrect the old you in regards to the way that you looked, or would you like to re-invent somebody else and completely change the way that you look??.

Sarah Burge, you are way off the mark if you think that statement is going to positively and actively improve the way Grace is feeling about herself right now. That statement insinuates that her looks weren?t and aren?t good enough, and that to heal herself she has to completely change physically. Of course Grace should have reconstructive surgery if she needs it, but removing the physical scars won?t heal the mental scarring; which will probably take years, and a qualified counsellor.

Sarah then goes on to explain a number of cosmetic procedures Grace could undergo to remove the damage caused by her husband. The wounds all look very fresh, and have clearly not yet had the chance and time to heal naturally; how can you even begin to suggest surgery when she might still be in a position to receive and acquire more physical injuries and mental harm?

At the 5 minute mark, there is a frankly bizarre re-enactment of a violent episode Grace endured. The strange thing is, is that the woman in the clip could pass as Grace?s identical twin, it may even be Grace, I can?t say for sure. I know myself I would hate to have to re-enact an act of violence committed against me, I could literally think of nothing more frightening and distressing. The man featured in the clip also bears an uncanny resemblance to Sarah Burge?s husband.

At the 6 minute mark Grace pulls something out of her pocket and shows it to Sarah, it?s a picture of her supposedly before the physical violence started. Bear in mind that Grace tells Sarah at the beginning of the video that she met her husband when she was 17, and that they have been married around 15 years. Grace describes several different violent episodes that appear to have occurred early on in their relationship. The video cuts to a still of the picture from Grace?s pocket (see below), that picture looks to me to be a professional headshot of Grace and a quite recent one at that. It all just doesn?t add up for me I?m afraid!

I know victims of domestic abuse can be very good at hiding their injuries, but the composition of the picture just doesn?t match with the Grace Brown sitting on the sofa and I don?t just mean the physical injuries don?t match. The aura of the Grace Brown in the picture is totally different to the Grace Brown on the sofa. If the whole video is a re-enactment of Grace?s story then this would make perfect sense, if an actor was playing Grace to protect her identity, then of course they would have to use a professional headshot, but there is no (as I mentioned previously) disclaimer in the video or its description.

My main issue with this video is that Sarah heavily emphasises the need for Grace to undergo cosmetic procedures to heal the damage caused by the domestic violence she?s been a victim of, when in actual fact she should be focusing on getting Grace out of the harmful, volatile and violent situation she is in. Not once does Sarah mention Grace?s mental wellbeing, nor does she suggest counselling to coincide the cosmetic surgery. Of course it is vital for Grace to be able to face the world feeling confident about her looks and not have any reminders of the physical damage caused by her husband; but how is she supposed to face the world with a beautiful face if she doesn?t feel beautiful on the inside? Domestic violence is just as much about the mental abuse as the physical and reinventing yourself physically won?t remove the bad memories and negative statements instilled in you by an abusive partner.

The next part of this article will hopefully shed some light as to why this video angered me so much.

At the beginning of my third year of university, I started seeing someone who lived in the same block of flats as me (we?ll call him Bob); we?d only been seeing each other for about a month. After a night out I told him he couldn?t come back to my flat because my flat mate was unwell; he took this information badly and started shouting insults loudly at me. He called me all the names under the sun, I told him I didn?t want to speak to him when he was like this and told him I would talk to him in the morning.

A friend who lived in a flat on the ground floor came up to my flat, she?d bought two of our male friends with her, they wanted to have a look around the flat. After a quick tour we settled in my room and began talking about the evening. A few minutes later someone started banging on the door to the flat, it was Bob. He was shouting loudly, demanding that I open the door and let him in, I told everyone to ignore him hoping he?d go away. The next thing I know, there was an almighty bang, and Bob had kicked the door in.

I went outside my room and asked him what he thought he was doing; he began storming around the flat, looking in every room. My flatmate was in our bathroom, Bob flung the door open and it hit her in the leg. He was absolutely raging, convinced I had strange men in the flat, and that I was cheating on him. By this point my guests had moved to the living room and decided to let us get on with it, I repeatedly asked Bob to leave because he was scaring me, but he wouldn?t. I tried to push him towards the door but he shoved me into the wall, after that my two male guests managed to get him to leave, and he then went upstairs and trashed his bedroom.

That night, my housemate and I had to put a chair against our door and then locked ourselves in my bedroom with various pieces of furniture against the door. We were petrified he was going to come back and do something else, we didn?t know what, but the fear in our minds conjured all manner of horrid things. I should have called the police, but it didn?t register in my mind that I?d been a victim of domestic violence until much later on.

I know my situation is mild, if not tepid in comparison to what Sarah Burge, Grace Brown and thousands of others have been through, but I just feel I should explain my story so you get a better understanding as to why Sarah?s video affected me so badly and why I feel the need to write this article. If I had reinvented myself physically, it wouldn?t have helped ease the anxiety I felt every time I heard Bob whistling as he past my flat on the way up to his. It wouldn?t have stopped me going over and over in my mind all the things I did and said that might have caused him to do what he did to me.

What did help me though was the constant love and support of my friends and family. They were there to tell me it wasn?t my fault, they were there to tell me I didn?t deserve it, and they gave me the strength to stand up and walk away. I know I was lucky to have such a strong network of people around me, many don?t. I just wish Sarah Burge was sending out a more positive message to those who look to her for advice; being a prominent figure in the media she has the power to influence people and make a change. The message she?s sending to victims may not necessarily be the right one!

I know its clich?, but beauty comes from within, and I think in today?s society people should really hold onto that more!

Here are some cool images taken during a Memorial Day parade in Washington, D.C., circa May 1942. As this was the first Memorial Day since the United States military officially entered World War II it likely took on extra significance.?I?m no military expert so I can?t identify any of the units in these photos. I?m assuming they?re reserve units, but I could be wrong. There?s a few shots in this gallery of what was referred to at the time as a Colored unit.
