Spotify takes Facebook's Timeline feature to insane extremes

Image
Worried that Facebook's new Timeline feature is going to offer up too much information? Don't worry, whatever roller coaster ride your relationship status updates might be, you've got nothing on Spotify. The music streamer is offering up 1,000-odd years of music history on its Facebook page, reaching back to 1,000AD, which was apparently a big year for organum lovers.

Acer Aspire AM3970-UR11P

The Acer Aspire AM3970-UR11P ($699.99 list) certainly has an awkward name. Pity, because the desktop strikes a good visual balance between utilitarian and flashiness. It's a tower, but it's not a boring looking tower. Component-wise, the system is pretty much a middle of the road tower desktop with some internal storage capability. It's got some software additions to help Acer fans, like those who bought an Iconia Tab, but ultimately it's a middle of the road desktop with a middle of the road price and feature set.

Design and Features
The AM3970-UR11P is built into a full sized tower desktop chassis, with a mainly black visage. It's got some styling cues to distinguish itself, like a side mounted power button and optical drive releases. It's got space inside for some decent expansion, including space for two additional PCIe x1 cards, two more hard drives, and an optical drive. All four of the memory DIMM slots are filled by the included 8GB of RAM, but 8GB should be enough for even power users at this time. One PCIe x1 slot is filled by the installed 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi card, and the PCIe x16 slot by the AMD Radeon HD 6450 card. The Radeon HD 6450 is an entry-level graphics card. It's not too powerful, but it is DX11 compliant, which makes it more advanced than the DX10-compliant Intel HD Graphics 2000 built into the Core i5-2320 processor. Outside, the system has a plethora of ports: ten USB 2.0, two faster USB 3.0 ports, HDMI-out (on the graphics card), audio ports, PS/2 ports (mouse and keyboard), a DVI port, and Ethernet.

The USB 3.0 ports are key, as they allow you to use speedier external hard drives for extra storage. The USB 3.0 ports are in the back, but four USB 2.0 ports are on the top of the system. The top ?mounted ports are in front of a top-mounted tray, which is convenient if you'd like to park your external hard drive, camera, or smartphone for charging. The HDMI port on the graphics card lets you either set the system up with dual displays, or lets you hook the system up to a HDTV in your den for HD video viewing. The system has ample room for expansion, but be forewarned that the system can only use a midrange graphics card because of the 300W power supply. That said, the included Radeon card is fine for most non-game tasks. The system comes with a standard 1TB 5,400rpm SATA hard drive and a DVD burner, but you can add another two hard drives and another optical drive to the system.

Along with the hardware, the AM3970-UR11P comes with a lot of included software, however most of it could be categorized as bloatware. Just on the desktop, there's a smattering of icons for Acer Games, Acer Registration, clear.fi (connections to Acer tablets and smart TVs), eBay, McAfee Internet Security (a short 60-day subscription is included), Netflix, Barnes & Noble Nook, and Skype. While most of these services are useful, most require an additional subscription or payment. Strewn across the desktop surface, they remind the user of the deluge of ads in a place like Times Square. The whole effect is kind of busy. The same programs plus a bunch of others like Fooz Kids, NY Time Reader, Aupero! (online radio), My Winlocker, and Norton Online Storage are in the Start menu, which is frankly a better place for all these programs. Now some (or all) of these programs may be useful to you, but they clutter the desktop and hard drive. It would be best if Acer allowed you to choose to load them during the initial setup, so you don't have to deal with uninstalling them later.

Performance
Acer Aspire AM3970-UR11P The AM3970-UR11P's Core i5-2320 processor, 8GB of memory, and AMD Radeon HD 6450 graphics card help the system gain respectable benchmark numbers. The system is pretty quick, with a 1:20 time on our Handbrake video test, and 3:26 on our Photoshop CS5 test. These are comparable to the similarly equipped Dell XPS 8300 (x8300-4004NBK) (1:21 on Handbrake; 3:35 on CS5) ($699.99 list, 3.5 stars) and is a smidge faster than the compact Apple Mac mini (Thunderbolt) ($799 list, 4.5 stars) (1:42 on Handbrake; 3:47 on CS5). It's even within striking distance of the Alienware X51 ($999.99 direct, 4 stars) (1:20 Handbrake, 3:36 CS5). 3D performance is another matter, however. The AM3970-UR11P only shows an unplayable 27 fps on Crysisand 13 fps on Lost Planet 2, similar to the Dell XPS 8300 (x8300-4004NBK) but far behind the gaming-oriented Alienware. Suffice to say, if you want 3D gaming, go with an entry level gaming system right off the bat rather than buying an entry/midrange system and upgrading later.

Compared with the competition, the Acer Aspire AM3970-UR11P comes up as adequate, but unremarkable. It's about as powerful as the Dell XPS 8300 (x8300-4004NBK), but the Dell has a lot less in the way of bloatware. The Alienware X51 is a lot more expensive due to its gaming-class graphics card, but it's a better choice if you want gaming performance, since the AM3970-UR11P can't accept a gaming card later on. The midrange Editor's Choice Gateway DX4860-UB33P ($599.99 list, 4 stars) is ultimately a better bang for the buck, as it is $100 less expensive and has similar performance and features, aside from using integrated graphics instead of the AMD Radeon card. In concusion, the AM3970-UR11P is OK if you're an Acer fan; otherwise, there are better choices out there.

Cop goes undercover to bust California students

(AP) ? On his second trip through high school, former C-student Alex Salinas got a lot of A's.

He was 22, however, and an undercover narcotics officer going by the name Johnny Ramirez. When his first semester progress report showed a 3.25 average, the baby-faced police rookie made a mental note: Stop turning in homework assignments.

Eight months later, the ruse was up, and Exeter, a bucolic citrus-growing community in California's Central Valley, was turned on its ear after a school-day police sweep ended with a dozen Exeter High students in custody on drug charges.

Some people wondered how the deception by Salinas could have gone on for so long in the small town of just 10,000 people. Others lamented that the problems of the big city had come to the quaint community of antique shops and historic murals set amid a stunning backdrop of the snow-capped Sierra Nevada.

"It's amazing we were able to keep a secret in this little town for that long," said Police Chief Cliff Bush, who had been searching for years for just the right officer to pull off the undercover ploy. "People in little towns tend to know everything about everybody."

Leading the campus sweep this month was the tall, lanky Salinas, dressed in the crisp black uniform and combat boots of the Exeter Police Department instead of the T-shirts and sneakers he had worn as Johnny Ramirez.

Still, there was no mistaking the boyish face and the wide smile gleaming with braces.

"A lot of jaws dropped when they saw me," Salinas said. "They knew me as that kid at school that they hung around with, and then the next thing they're in handcuffs and I'm in a uniform."

The sting got more attention from the media than a drug bust of 12 students normally would because of something the chief now laments: It happened the same week as the debut of the Hollywood comedy "21 Jump Street," which features ? you got it ? undercover cops fighting crime at a high school.

Chief Bush insisted it was not a case of life imitating art.

"A day or two later I became aware of the movie," Bush said. "The last thing I would do is check movie premieres. This just happened to coincide with the movie's release."

There had been no major complaints about drug dealing at the 1,000-student school that sits within sight of the police station, but Bush said he had been thinking for years about doing an undercover sting to send a message.

One day last summer, he ran into Salinas, who was weeks away from graduating from the police academy. Salinas had ridden along with Bush years earlier when the chief was still a patrolman.

Bush eventually approached Salinas with the plan. With it came a full-time job on the city's 17-member Police Department ? an offer Salinas wouldn't refuse.

As Johnny Ramirez, Salinas attended Monarch football games and pep rallies. He purposely landed himself in detention so he could meet people outside of the four classes he attended before reporting each afternoon to the county drug task force headquarters for briefings and homework assignments. He made a Facebook page and forged friendships, which made the deception hard for him to bear.

"There were a few students I got to know who are good kids, and I did feel kind of bad for being their friend and then being something different," he said.

Only the principal, vice principal and Johnny's guidance counselor knew about the operation, school Superintendent Renee Whitson said.

"Even I didn't know the name he'd go by," she said.

Still, a moment of panic erupted on the first day of school last fall when a teacher pointed to the new kid and joked, "We've got a new narc on campus. They tell me he's wearing a green shirt." Johnny Ramirez's shirt was green.

Eventually students sold the new kid marijuana and cocaine, the prescription painkiller hydrocodone and the muscle relaxant Soma.

"There was certainly no celebration on the day of conclusion. It was a very sad day," Whitson said. "These are our students. We hope this is the necessary wakeup call to make this positive for their lives."

As the school year winds down, the arrested students are in the midst of review board hearings. Only three are older than 18, and one student's parents were also arrested for investigation of methamphetamine possession.

In the end, large quantities of drugs were not confiscated and none of the arrests involved trafficking significant quantities, though many purchases were for amounts that exceeded "personal use," Salinas said.

Was it worth keeping an officer off Exeter's streets and on a school campus for eight months?

Yes, Chief Bush said. But he is almost embarrassed that the undercover operation has garnered so much publicity, mostly because of his own bad timing regarding the release of "21 Jump Street."

"This is what I was trying to avoid, that we busted the local Scarface at the high school," Bush said, making reference to another Hollywood movie, this one about a drug kingpin. "Turns out they were just tiny amounts, but if you've got just one kid dealing drugs at school, that's too many."

The chief hopes the arrests have a lasting impact on all students, though he does realize he might have created a problem of another kind in Exeter.

"I'd hate to be the new kid at school next year," he said. "They won't make very many friends."

FTC seeks laws to reveal what data brokers hold

(AP) ? The Federal Trade Commission is calling for legislation that would give citizens access to the information that commercial data brokers store about them.

The proposal is an unusually tough one from an agency that prefers to coax companies into adopting voluntary principles. A month ago, Obama administration officials outlined a proposed "Consumer Privacy Bill of Rights" and urged technology companies, consumer groups and others to jointly craft new protections.

In a privacy report released this week, the FTC is urging the adopting of a law that would let consumers access and dispute personal data held by information brokers.

The report comes as the business of background checks is booming. An investigation by The Associated Press last year found that data brokers often store incorrect or outdated information, including criminal records.

Easy Tips To Cure Your Plumbing Woes | Internet Revenue Article ...

?

Maintaining and repairing your own plumbing is an essential part of home improvement, but understanding it and buying the right equipment can be tricky. There are lots of things to consider for your particular plumbing job. Here are some steps you can take to ensure you get started with your own plumbing jobs.

To help keep your drains working properly you should pay attention to clogs. Clogs are a common problem at home but with proper maintenance and preventive measures you can avoid a messy situation. Clogs are not only an annoyance, but can also lead to overflows and water damage. So make sure you keep your drains clog-free by implementing easy preventative practices.

To avoid hair from accumulating and clogging pipes. Use fine mesh strainers in every drain where hair is washed. Fine mesh strainers can catch the hair and still allow the shower, tub or sink to drain and are also useful in the kitchen to catch and stop small food debris from going down the drain.

Make sure to have someone check on your home if you plan to be away on vacation for longer than a few days. Plumbing problems can cause massive water damage, and the longer they?re a problem, a worse the results will be. Having someone drop by and check the place out can prevent the worst from happening.

Make sure you shut off your main system before leaving your house for a few weeks and get a boiler service on your return. The water will stay in the pipes, but this should prevent any further damages in case a leak starts while you are away. Check that your shut-off valve is working properly before you leave.

During the week, hair and soap can build up in your drains and can cause serious clogs. Make sure that you have strainers in each of your drains to help catch this debris so that it does not become an issue. This will help to keep your water flowing efficiently.

When you are working on any kind of plumbing project, you always need a backup person. This is because, when working with water, you never know when an emergency can happen and that second pair of hands can come in very useful! This can even be an unskilled person who can follow directions.

Make sure any plumber that you hire can handle the type of job you have especially if its a boiler service. There are many aspects to plumbing and many contractors can do almost all of them, but some are better suited to doing work involved in specific areas. If need a plumber for your septic system, get one that specializes in septic systems.

Do not pour grease or oil down any of your household drains. Put them in containers and place in the fridge until they are solid, then throw them away. If you pour them down the drain, they can solidify in cold pipes. These solid masses will clog your pipes and are very difficult to remove.

Make sure you get a good recommendation or check the references before you hire a plumber. With good recommendations, it will assure that you are hiring an experienced plumber. If the experienced plumber is professional, he will have a fully stocked truck and be able to complete most small jobs in one visit.

As you read, plumbing can be an incredibly important aspect to your current and future home improvement and so is understanding all the different techniques and equipment. This is so it makes it easier for you to understand what you need for your plumbing jobs. Following the tips in this article is a very good starting place.

(AP) ? A Minnesota man who provided a synthetic drug that killed a 19-year-old and sent 10 other partygoers to the hospital last year pleaded guilty Thursday to third-degree unintentional murder.

Timothy LaMere, 22, of Blaine, entered his plea in Anoka County District Court, bringing a sudden end to a case that spurred calls for tougher laws against synthetic drugs and their variants. According to the agreement, he'll receive nine years and nine months in prison, the maximum under sentencing guidelines.

Prosecutors said LaMere caused Trevor Robinson's death by providing him with the drug 2C-E.

"Many families have been affected by this tragedy," Anoka County Attorney Tony Palumbo said. "Experimenting with drugs never leads to a good result. In this case, it led to death."

Palumbo said to his knowledge, this is the first murder conviction related to the distribution of 2C-E. A similar case is pending in Oklahoma, where two people died after ingesting a designer drug at a party.

According to court documents in the Minnesota case, LaMere arrived at a party in Blaine last year with a bottle containing a substance that he said would cause hallucinations. He offered it to anyone who wanted some, and he and Robinson inhaled it through their noses.

The criminal complaint said Robinson began "punching walls, breaking items, staring and having dilated pupils and yelling." He stopped breathing and was taken to a hospital, where he died of cardiac arrest due to drug toxicity.

LaMere and 10 others who took the drug also became sick. Officers arrived to find the victims, ages 16 to 21, with a variety of side effects. Some were having trouble breathing, some appeared to be hallucinating, and others acted violently and struggled with medical personnel.

According to the Star Tribune, LaMere told the court Thursday that he bought the synthetic drug online but didn't know it was illegal.

The U.S. attorney's office had told Anoka County prosecutors that it might pursue federal charges, which could carry stiffer penalties, if a deal wasn't reached. Defense attorney Brad Zunker told the court this factored into his client's decision to plead guilty, the Star Tribune reported.

Zunker did not immediately return a phone message left by The Associated Press.

The U.S. attorney's office declined comment.

"The tragedy in Blaine is a stark reminder that synthetic drugs are a deathtrap," Mona Dohman, commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Safety, said in a statement.

Officials say 2C-E can be bought online and was illegal at the time of Robinson's death because it is a "cousin drug" to a banned rave-party drug. At the time, it was not specifically listed as a banned drug but was defined as a controlled substance.

The state law has since been clarified, and U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar has introduced federal legislation to specifically ban 2C-E and other synthetic hallucinogens. She also co-sponsored legislation to ban synthetic marijuana and bath salts. All the bills won unanimous passage through the Senate Judiciary Committee, and Klobuchar is now working to bring them to a vote in the full Senate.

Klobuchar said this case illustrates why a federal ban is important. She said the lack of a ban creates confusion, and many people, like LaMere, buy these drugs online and don't know they are illegal.

"You have people that are buying these drugs, and nobody even knows how powerful they are," she said. "It ends up killing people."

LaMere is scheduled to be sentenced May 25.

Palumbo said he hopes the conviction, as well as the horrible circumstances of Robinson's death, will deter others from experimenting with synthetic drugs.

"Hopefully some young people will have learned from this," he said.

Meet the Broadband company Sat 24th March 10 to noon | Whixley ...

High speed internet for even more North Yorkshire homes.

Anyone living in the Ouseburns area, including Marton-cum-Grafton, Upper & Lower Dunsforth and Whixley, who would like to find out more about the scheme and see how it operates ? and what it will deliver ? can come along to meet its organisers in Great Ouseburn Village Hall Club Room on Saturday 24th March 2012, between 10 and noon.

Residents of villages in and around Great and Little Ouseburn are getting ready to enjoy the benefits that a high speed internet connection brings when the latest Connecting North Yorkshire (CNY) project goes live on Monday (26 March 2012).

CNY is an initiative led by North Yorkshire County Council. It has been awarded ?17.8 million by BDUK ? a Government organisation tasked with ensuring that 90% of the UK can receive high quality broadband access by 2015 and 100% by 2017.

The new Ouseburns internet connection will enable individuals and businesses to access high speed broadband utilising a fibre hub to transmit wirelessly to surrounding communities. The internet service provider for the Ouseburns area will be LN Communications Ltd, a wireless service provider who has already enabled several community networks in North Yorkshire and East Riding.

?We are developing small community based broadband schemes across the county, in areas where it is not commercially viable ? the broadband ?not spots? ? using funds from NYCC and the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE)? said County Councillor Carl Les, Chair of Connecting North Yorkshire.

?The good news is that the funding for the Ouseburns area project is coming from the Performance Reward Grant (PRG), which is money North Yorkshire received for exceeding its targets set by Government across public services. It is anticipated further communities will be able to bid for this money as we seek to add at least another dozen schemes to our current project list?.

?This is a very exciting time for us? said David Burton, one of the Community Champions for the Ouseburns Connecting North Yorkshire Project. ?The availability of high speed broadband will enhance the personal and business lives of people within our communities who currently suffer from poor broadband services. To get to this point has taken hard work by a lot of people? but we are all looking forward to enjoying the rewards it will bring.?

Anyone living in the Ouseburns area, including Marton-cum-Grafton, Upper & Lower Dunsforth and Whixley, who would like to find out more about the scheme and see how it operates ? and what it will deliver ? can come along to meet its organisers in Great Ouseburn Village Hall Club Room on Saturday 24th March 2012, between 10 and noon.

Notes

North Yorkshire is England?s largest rural county with a population of just under 600,000 spread over roughly 3,000 square miles. Approximately one in eight of the working age population of the county is self-employed. The remoteness of the region has previously resulted in limited broadband access. As a consequence there is concern that the demographic profile of North Yorkshire will become further polarised.

North Yorkshire was originally chosen by BDUK in October 2010 as one of four areas for a pilot rural broadband project.

The potential communities set to benefit from the Great Ouseburn Connecting North Yorkshire Scheme are; Great & Little Ouseburn, Marton-cum-Grafton, Upper & Lower Dunsforth and Whixley.

Connecting North Yorkshire is supported financially by the European Union. The project has attracted approximately ?15 million of investment from the European Regional Development Fund as part of Europe?s support for local economic development through the Yorkshire and Humber ERDF Programme 2007-13.

NYnet, the county council?s broadband company, is also working with the European Regional Development Fund to secure match funding bringing the total investment for the county wide broadband project to ?25-?30 million. NYnet was formed by North Yorkshire County Council with funding from Yorkshire Forward and the European Union, and provides a super-fast broadband network to ensure that North Yorkshire is not ?left behind? by the rest of the world in the next phase of the internet revolution.

LN Communications mission is to provide fast, reliable broadband internet access to anyone, anywhere. Specialising in wireless technology, the company has technicians with particular expertise in providing ?Wide Area Networks? that are used to bring broadband internet access to rural and often quite remote communities. LN Communications provides high speed broadband services to almost 100 communities throughout rural North Yorkshire.

Colorectal Cancer Screening Rates High ? Biomed Middle East

By jamal, on March 21st, 2012

The study used data based on a survey of 1,153 Appalachian men and women aged 50-76. Respondents were given four sets of questions designed to gather information on demographics, the presence of co-mordibities such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and various types of cancer, adherence to colorectal cancer screening guidelines, and barriers to and facilitators of colorectal cancer screening behaviour.

Researchers found a dose-response relationship between the number of morbidities and the prevalence of colon cancer screening in the Appalachian population. Of those who reported two to three morbidities, 61.6 per cent had received a colonoscopy, 65.7 per cent had received a guideline-concordant colorectal screening. For patients with six or more morbidities, the rates rose to 69.6 per cent and 79.6 per cent, respectively.

In contrast, just 50 per cent of those who reported no morbidities had undergone a colonoscopy, and only 56.5 per cent had received any guideline-concordant colorectal screening.

The high screening rates in the multimorbid population were surprising, but it is a strong indication that the efforts to raise awareness about the importance of colonoscopies and other screening methods is working, says Nancy Schoenberg of the UK College of Medicine.

?Over the past 10 years, there has been increasing coverage of the importance of colorectal cancer screening,? Schoenberg said. ?We are probably at about the same screening rate for colorectal cancer now that we were for cervical cancer and breast cancer several decades ago. We hope that colorectal cancer screening will eventually become as commonplace and routine as Pap tests and mammograms.?

The higher screening rates in those with multiple health problems could also be due to more frequent contact with physicians, while residents who are otherwise healthy may not be visiting their physician as frequently, said Steve Fleming, associate professor of epidemiology at the UK College of Public Health.

?Doctors who see these multimorbid patients on a regular basis are more likely to remind patients about receiving regular screenings,? Fleming said. ?This shows that perhaps some of our outreach efforts should target the folks who are relatively healthy and see no need to visit their physicians regularly.?

Who made our team of the week?

Goalkeeper: Houston?s Tally Hall

Rationale, motive and intent: Dealt professionally with tricky, wet balls played into his area as the host Earthquakes pressed desperately toward the end.

Back line: Houston?s Andrew Hainault, Colorado?s Marvel Wynne, Montreal?s Matteo Ferrari, Sporting Kansas City?s Seth Sinovic.

Rationale, motive and intent: Stationed wide for Houston and, despite always looking more like a natural center back, Hainault did get up the field. And he controlled San Jose?s left side as the Dynamo posted its second consecutive shutout on the road. Early days for Ferrari, but he looked composed and in control in the Impact?s initial home match. ?Sinovic had his paw prints somewhere on all three SKC goals.

Midfield: Montreal?s Davy Arnaud, Los Angeles? David Beckham, Real Salt Lake?s Ned Grabavoy, Portland?s Darlington Nagbe.

Rationale, motive and intent: Nagbe is the rare man who will make ProSoccerTalk?s team despite coming off the bench. He changed the game and helped Portland rescue the points. Beckham was afforded way too much midfield space and made life miserable on D.C. United?s beleaguered back line. Arnaud did much more than unlock a historic goal, although that might have been enough by itself.

Forwards: Seattle?s David Estrada, Los Angeles? Robbie Keane

Rationale, motive and intent: Estrada nailed a hat trick in his 7th professional start. Keane probably can?t remember his 7th professional start, since it was way back with Wolves in the 1990s. Never mind that, though; he hit twice and arranged nicely for others.

Marketing Headhunter.com: Director of Catalog, Brand, & Trade ...

We are working with Lumens Light + Living in their search for a Director of Marketing. Lumens Light + Living is a rapidly growing, multi-channel retailer of lighting products for home and business based in Sacramento, CA.

HARRY'S COMMENTS: Let's start this section by saying that Ken Plumlee, Lumens? CEO, is a very nice guy. I do project kickoff calls all the time. Maybe three per week these days. Some of them are great. Some of them not so much. The difference is always related to the knowledge, vision, and enthusiasm of the hiring manager towards the role. Make no mistake: If you get this job, this company will be behind you 100%.

Who is Lumens?

Lumens is an Internet Retailer Top 500 sized company focused on the sale of lighting and home furnishings for design savvy customers, designers, and architects. 35% of the company?s business is to the wholesale trade ? but ultimately, Lumens? customers are homeowners who are either remodeling, or building, or redecorating. They value well-known brands, clean contemporary design, and they look to Lumens as a definitive source for those products. They tend to read Elle D?cor or Dwell and take personal interest in design.

Lumens? trade audience is composed mostly of interior desig ners who have a contemporary style.? It's a fantastic market: The US interior design industry includes about 10,000 companies with combined annual revenue of about $8 billion. Major companies include units of architecture and design firms such as Gensler, HOK, and Perkins + Will. The industry is highly fragmented: the 50 largest firms account for about 10 percent of revenue.

The company has a fanatical focus on customer service, which complements the tools and capabilities that it offers on its website. Think of Lumens as the Crutchfield Electronics of the lighting business: Have you ever bought something from Crutchfield? If you have, then you may know that Crutchfield's customer service reps are audiophiles whose contagious love of both the customer and the product is obvious.

It's the same at Lumens: Clients can speak with a human being and get objective, expert advice from somebody who loves the client and the products. If customer satisfaction is any measure, then Lumens is a company that has its act together. See for yourself.

About the role ...

?Previously Lumens had someone in the role, but the company has changed its focus slightly. The former Director managed event marketing, trade marketing, print marketing, and some ecommerce functions (primarily affiliate and email). Today, Lumens? Director of Ecommerce is handling online marketing, user experience, and web analytics, while the new Director of Marketing will be a ?pure marketer,? with a focus on brand building utilizing mostly off-line tools.

The new Director of Marketing will also be responsible for managing the company?s trade programs, which will include enrollment of new trade partners as well as communication and segmentation for existing trade customers. Beyond that, the company seeks a new voice in formulating its brand advertising programs. The company values its print channels (like Dwell) but would also like to better evaluate its advertising and steer its brand accordingly.? The company also publishes a twice-yearly catalog, and Ken would love some assistance in figuring out how to get more mileage out of it. There is an enormous amount of information I can share with qualified candidates on this last point.

How will I know if I?m doing a good job after 100 days?

From a marketing standpoint, this role is really a mixed bag: In order to succeed, a candidate must have a deep working knowledge of branding and positioning, ad agency management, print advertising, media buying, CRM (NetSuite), database marketing, loyalty and retention strategies, catalog marketing, and email marketing. Trust me, if you don't have these things, then you really don't want this job.

After 100 days, you should have reviewed and implemented an update to Lumens? brand advertising strategy, implemented a trade customer acquisition program, and reevaluated the company's catalog strategy. Your success will rely on your ability to ?

  • Formulate and match the right message with the right target markets,
  • Research and test the impact of the company's previous brand marketing efforts,
  • Dig in to Lumens? trade customer database and ask important questions about which vehicles the company can use to reach new and potential customers, and ...
  • Completely review Lumens? catalog strategy to determine its role in the marketing mix going forward.

Ideally, you'll be strategic. You will be completely comfortable evaluating and managing outside resources, and you won't need hand-holding. You might know a thing or two about copywriting. (Trust me, that's a handy skill.) And beyond all that, you will have an analytical bias to the way you make decisions.

If this sounds like you, then I'd love to hear from you. Please check out the rest of this job posting, then apply.

Please Tweet this job, and you'll be automatically entered into our monthly drawing. Just do it and see what happens: 2010 prizes included $100 Amazon gift certs, Dean & Deluca steaks, and Keurig coffee machines ...
